The Library Conference, a Photoblog

Even though the conference was just thirty miles from my home,
I decided to stay in a hotel in Houston.
What a great view!

As usual, there were lots of great authors,
including this author, one of my favorites,
Hank the Cowdog author John R. Erickson.

Zita the Spacegirl author/illustrator Ben Hatke.

 Divergent author Veronica Roth.
I came that close to getting a copy of Insurgent.
A kind librarian generously offered to loan me her ARC.

Great sessions, including this one about
the ALA Every Child Ready to Read
program that we initiated with a small grant
 at our school this year.

Some of the usual unusual characters at the library conference.

Wouldn't it be nice to have an outdoor reading room at my library?!

I took home a first place medal in the Fun Run this year!

 I found a geocached book,
even though I really didn't know what to do with it when I found it!

And, best of all, I took home a gentle wolf puppet
and a nice little stack of free books
from the conference!

How was your reading week?

What is the Sunday Salon
Imagine some university library's vast reading room.
It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in.
They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them,
and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go.
Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and
compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....

That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual.
Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon
get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read.
And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs.
Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon,
an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities
and fall into a good book.

  1. I am so jealous. I am glad you got to stay in a hotel. I think you get so much more out of the conference when you stay.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Doris

  2. Staying at the hotel was a good decision for me. For the first time, the exhibitors were open during the first evening of the conference. Lots of publishers gave away their best ARCs that night. I spent two hours roaming around the exhibition hall, collecting piles of ARCs. It was fabulous!

    1. It sounds like staying at the hotel made it feel like more of a special event than if you had just commuted from your house.

BTW, thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. The wolf puppet is a big hit at my primary school library. I dubbed him the Little Good Wolf, son of Big Bad.

  6. It sounds like you had a great time at the conference! Geocaching, Veronica Roth, and an outdoor reading room sound like a perfect weekend. Too bad you didn't get Insurgent, I am so looking forward to reading it!

    1. One of the librarians in my district scored a copy of Insurgent and oh-so-kindly offered to share it with me. Our district librarian meeting is next Friday...so I am very hopeful....

  7. I would have so stayed in a hotel if I were going more than one day, but alas my library could only afford me one day so others could attend other days. Next year though... :) Also, I just love your wolf puppet! So very cute! <3 I'm glad you had a good time, too, Deb.

    1. I wish I'd gotten to meet up with you. Oddly, this conference for the first time, I had several people recognize me from my blog! I thought they might be you, but, alas, no.

  8. I was going to say exactly what CMash said. Wow.

I think I need to get myself to one of these library conferences one of these days, if only our director would approve it.

Veronica Roth looks a bit mischievous, I think.

    1. I get so much out of conferences that I don't mind paying for things myself, if necessary. The hotel, for example, came out of my pocket. So did everything except for the conference cost itself. But the conference is so energizing that I don't mind spending my own money on it.

  13. Wow! What were you suppose to do with the book once you found it? My library has an outdoor reading room but it's usually taken over by teenagers. Glad to hear you had such a great trip.
