Happy Father's Day and The End of Men, Plus Week Three of A Book-a-Day

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! We are planning to cook some burgers on my husband's brand new Father's Day gift today for my husband, my son, my brother, and my dad. I love to get together with my family.

I did a post last week on The Most Amazing Fathers in Books (and Real Life), if you didn't get to take a look at that.

WHAT ARRIVED LAST WEEK

I got a couple of new books in last week:

The End of Men: A Novel by Karen Rinaldi
Yoga Bodies: Real People, Real Stories, and the Power of Transformation

And I also joined the Book of the Month Club. I know, I know, I just brought home 98 pounds of books from BookExpo and I joined BOTM? Inexplicable? The only people who can possibly understand this are my fellow book people.

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK

I'm continuing to read a #bookaday this summer:

So many great reads this summer. Lots of five star reads, including Radium Girls, Tuck Everlasting, and One Crazy Summer.

WHAT I'M READING NOW

How is your summer going? Are you reading anything you recommend?

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

  1. Your new arrivals seem fun :) I'd like to check out that Yoga book.
You read The Radium Girls! Will there be a review? I interviewed the author, in case you're interested (can give you a link if you want). I enjoyed that book so much and feel like it's such an important story.

  2. Interested to see 'Radium Girls'. I'd thought it might be similar to 'Girls of Atomic City' or 'Their Day in the Sun' i.e. about women who worked on the Manhattan Project during WW2 - but no, it's about another dangerous occupation! Sounds fascinating, Deb Nance.

  3. I enjoyed Brooklyn...and I'm considering Anything Is Possible.

I'm curious about The End of Men.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  6. I have Anything is Possible on my list for when school starts back. If it's anything like Lucy Barton I figure it will be a kind of quiet listen which is hard to do with the constant questions of my 7 year old! 98 lbs of books is impressive! I hope you enjoy all of them. BOTM is completely unrelated so I don't see the issue there!

  7. Wow! You're amazing reading a book a day. Even in summer I can't do that.

Some great books there. Did you like Anything Is Possible?

  8. Summer?? Oh gosh - it is dreadfully cold in SA!! We've moved from the hottest province to one of the coldest ones a couple of months ago - I'm still trying to get used to it...!

Yes, I do understand you joining BOTM. Good for you! Actually I'm a bit jealous.

There really are some great new reads out this season! Need to get my hands on a few.

Happy week and enjoy the reading!

  14. Big haul. This last week or so I've been mostly digging in to Wide Sargasso Sea, a classic by Jean Rhys. Beautifully written and so layered. So far, so interesting. The One Crazy Summer cover looks familiar...remind me who's the cover artist? Happy reading.
