Hurricane Harvey Hits Houston

Hurricane Harvey
Last week was a blur of rain, rain, rain, followed by lakes of water on roads and lakes of water in homes, followed by heaps of torn-out sheetrock, bloated furniture, and water-stained mattresses.

I don't want to think about last week and all the destruction in people's lives.  Hurricane Harvey. I don't want to relive it any more than I already have.

Books Read Last Week
Despite five days of rain, with 57 1/2 inches of water, and heavy winds, we never lost power. To distract myself from the rain, I tried to settle in on a book. All I could handle at first were YA books. I read What to Say Next, Words in Deep Blue, and How to Find Love in rapid succession. When the rain let up on Wednesday morning, I found I could read heavier reads and I picked up Sing, Unburied, Sing and The Blue Zones of Happiness in intervals where we weren't out helping those who were flooded.

Reviews to come soon.

The Call for Cybils Judges

The call for Cybils judges went out on Monday, August 21. The volunteer application will be open until September 11. If you love children's books or YA books, and you love to write about the books you read on your blog, we'd love to have you on our Cybils team. I hope you will apply. Apply here.

What are you reading today?

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

  6. So much devastation I know. I'm glad to hear that you didn't lose power, I hope your house wasn't damaged. I've been thinking of you but I've been away carousing and doing bookish things in Melbourne.

  10. I was glued to my TV watching what was happening in Houston and hoping everyone I knew there was okay. Reading would definitely have to take a back seat with all that was going on. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  12. You must have been on the fringe of it not to lose power, but such a bad experience. I do hope you never have to go through that again. Weather is so powerful.

  15. Thank you for posting the closing date for this year's CYBILs call for judges. I've put my application in but didn't recall how long the call would be open. Glad you are safe. I'm sorry your city went through that mess. Here we have extreme heat and fires and smoke from those fires.

    Come see what I'm reading

  18. You've been in my thoughts! I'm so glad you're safe. What an awful situation. Between the hurricane and all the fires in CA/OR/WA/ID/MT, it's a sad end of summer for so very many.

    1. Thank you, Les. There's times in my life when I can literally feel the thoughts and prayers of others, and this visit with unwelcome guest, Hurricane Harvey, is one of them. I hope you know that I'm praying for you and your husband in your new state.
