Out in the World Again, With Homemade Granola, Cream Cheese Braid, and a Tomato Galette

It was a week of more venturing out into the world. I visited one of my favorite libraries, Freeman Library of the Harris County Library System, which just reopened. A man was singing, "I am so happy that my library is open again! I am so happy that my library is open again!" as he climbed the stairs to the library. Freeman Library has a lovely little used bookstore and I spent a few hours browsing the shelves there.

The Book Jumper by Methtilde Gläser ⭐⭐⭐

The Book Jumper was a nice romp for those of us who like books-about-books. I couldn't help writing a blog post for The Superior Person's Second Book of Weird & Wonderful Words, and I also felt I had to buy and read the first book since the second book was so good. The Bird Way shattered every belief I had about bird behavior, and that was a good thing.

I am enjoying Bewilderment and The Girl With the Louding Voice so much that I don't want to get to the end of either novel.

I've now accumulated 10 books for my 20 Books of Summer challenge. I'm hoping to read 20 books from my 1001 Children's Books list. It was delightful to hear others' thoughts on the 285 books I have left to read. FictionFan recommended The Mystery of the Yellow Room and the Jennings and Darbishire books. Reese at Typings said The Baron in the Trees is one of his favorite books, and that Baron Munchhausen is a "wild ride." (Happily, I have a copy of The Baron in the Trees.) Cath at Read-Warbler told me that her favorite book of childhood is on the list, The Minnow on the Say. (You can understand that I felt the need to order that one.) CLM at Staircase Wit said her sentimental favorite is The Little White Horse. Bron at This Reading Life wrote a whole post about her childhood favorites, and I spent the better half of a day trying to get my hands on some of these books, though I was sadly unsuccessful. Louise at A Strong Belief in Wicker offered to do a read-along with a French children's book during Paris in July this year, and I ordered a copy of A Hundred Million Francs in hopes that this will happen.

We took in two intriguing movies this week.

One was the French sci-fi movie Fantastic Planet. It's the story of a planet where humans are the playthings of the dominant species, and it won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973.

Some Kind of Heaven is a documentary made in 2020 about The Villages, a huge retirement community in Florida, a place one resident describes as "Disneyland for retirees," and it's considered by some to be one of the best documentaries of the year.

Being back in the world has inspired me to do some baking this week.

Wondrous Words: Contronyms

It started when I saw this on Jackie's Junk Boat Travels.

It eventually led me to explore 75 Contronyms at Daily Writing Tips.

Admit it. You know you want to see the whole list. Here it is.

I love these.

I'm most taken, I think, with "fine" meaning both "excellent" and "good enough,"
and "mean" meaning both "average" or "excellent."

Which one do you like best?

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered, or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative! It was first created by Kathy over at Bermuda Onion and is now hosted at Elza Reads.

Great Quotes from Books About Books...

My very favorite quotes-from-books-about-books are
the last two.
Be sure to read the last two
even if you skip all the others.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each Tuesday That Artsy Reader Girl assigns a topic and then post her top ten list that fits that topic. You’re more than welcome to join her and create your own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well. Feel free to put a unique spin on the topic to make it work for you! Please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own post so that others know where to find more information.

Yes, and...Daily Meditations; Favorite Folktales from Around the World; and 100 Poems to Break Your Heart

It was a week of re-emerging into the world. We went out to eat at a restaurant, I joined a swim class, I met with my book club in person, I went to a retirement party for a beloved former colleague...life almost felt like it was, if oddly, back to normal.

I finished three books. I'd been reading each of these for over a month. One was a book of meditations. One was a book of poetry. One was a book of folktales. I highly recommend all three. Click on the links for my reviews.

My friends and I at book club, meeting together in person this week

Good Thing #1
My husband and I ate at a restaurant
It's our favorite local Mexican food restaurant.
We ate outdoors.
I had enchiladas and a margarita.

Good Thing #2
I joined a swim class.
My Y has not reopened,
but our town offers lots of classes, too.
I went to the first class Thursday.
Lots of my other friends from the Y have joined.
It was fabulous.

Good Thing #3
Our book club met together in person
for the first time in over a year.
We were so happy to see each other
that we didn't even talk about the book.

20 Books of Summer: How Many of the 1001 Children's Book List Can I Read This Summer?

Cathy at 746 Books is hosting her 20 Books of Summer Challenge. Cathy writes:

One summer.

Three months.

93 Days.

20 books.

Are you in?

When I was working, summer was my big reading time. I used that (much-needed) time to catch up on my kid reading.

Now I'm retired. I am always able to easily read 3-7 books a week.

So let me up the challenge a bit.

As some of you know, I've been trying to read all 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up. As of today, I am at 715 books read.  That leaves me with 286 books to go.

I propose to try to read 20+ books from my list this summer.

It sounds like an easy task, reading children's books. But the truth is that I've read almost all of the easy books---the picture books, the short chapter books, the books widely available here in the US. What I'm left with are the big books (12+), the books I can't find at the library or even Amazon, books I can't find in English, books that (honestly) don't really appeal to me.

I will not let these problems stop me from my quest. Here is the list of books that will guide my reading this summer.
