The Sunday Salon: Three Basketball Wins, a Classics Club Spin, and Reading a Book a Day

Welcome! We are delighted that you joined us here at the
Sunday Salon

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a spot to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

With all the snow in East Texas and with schools closed and roads closed, we were not sure we would be able to make it up there, but everything opened back up and we got to visit with our family and see the grandkids play basketball over a long four-day weekend. It even warmed up enough for us to go outside and hang out for a while.

It was cold and I read a lot last week. I finished seven books - four five-star books and three four-star books.

What I Read Last Week:

Grand Hotel by Vicki Baum (Classic)

What Mad Universe by Frederic Brown (Science Fiction)

by Frederick Buechner (Spirituality)

by Annabel Abbs (Historical Fiction)

The Circuit: The Graphic Novel by Francisco Jiménez (Memoir)

All the Blues in the Sky by Renée Watson (2025 Newbery Winner)

Fireworks written by Matthew Burgess and illustrated by Catia Chien (2025 Caldecott Winner)

What I'm Reading Now:

The Brothers Karamozov by Fyodor Dostoevsky (Classic)

Native Nations: A Millenium in North America by Kathleen DuVal (History)

Little, Big by John Crowley (Fantasy)

The Classics Club has issued the announcement of the Classics Club’s 43rd CC Spin.

What is the Spin?

It’s easy. At your blog, before next Sunday, February 8th, create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list.

This is your Spin List.

You have to read one of these twenty books by the end of the spin period.

On Sunday, February 8th, The Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by Sunday, March 29th

Let's see who can make it the whole way and finish their spin book!

I have a lot of books to read on my latest Classics Club list. Let's see where the needle stops.

So here is my list.

1. Coronado's Children: Tales of Lost Mines and Buried Treasure by J. Frank Dobie

2. The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes

3. Lost Horizon by James Hilton

4. The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley

5. Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes by Robert Louis Stevenson

6. Bevis: The Story of a Boy by Richard Jefferies

7. The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham

8. Brendon Chase by B. B.

9. Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

10. In the Mountains by Elizabeth von Arnim

11. Out of the Silent Planet by C. S. Lewis

12. The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

13. The Song of the Lark by Willa Cather

14. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin

15. The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh

16. In a Summer Season by Elizabeth Taylor

17.  Quartet in Autumn by Barbara Pym

18. Stowaway to Mars by John Wyndham

19. A Lost Lady by Willa Cather

20. Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino

Have you read any of these?

Do you recommend any of these?

And the spin stops on...2!

The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes!

Full disclosure: If you thought my #2 was Far From the Madding Crowd,
it was, but I really, really wanted to read some Langston Hughes
right now, so I switched it.

What I Posted Last Week Here at Readerbuzz:

I'm off to a good start with my yearly challenges.

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:

Good Thing #1:

Wyatt's team won!

Good Thing #2:

Annie's team won!

Good Thing #3:

My son, Jon, is coach of Annie's team,
so he also got a win this weekend.

Weekend linkup spots are listed below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

    1. If nothing else, What Mad Universe is an appropriate title for how I feel right now.

  4. Ooh, on our Classics Spin list, have you read Parnassus on Wheels already? IIRC I liked that a lot more than The Haunted Bookshop, though honestly I'm having trouble remembering The Haunted Bookshop.

Looks like a great week for reading!

  6. Deb, how nice that you guys were able to get to the grandkids and also see their games. Fun, fun! Lovely pictures of them. And, the weather is now cooperating. It's supposed to be above 80 here today (maybe). I'm OK with that. LOL

  7. Stevenson's Travels with a Donkey is one of my favorite travel books, ever since I read it in high school.

    1. I have a beautiful old copy of that book. Since the spinner did not stop on it this time, I will try to read it in July for Paris in July. I think part of it takes place in France.

  8. I have Lost Horizon on my spin list. Read it deacdes ago in college but it's on my list for Classics. Good luck and I hope you get the book you are hoping for.

  9. I have read four of yours (2,3,11,12) and enjoyed all of them. I hope you get the Hilton. I read two of his for my first CC list and have a third on my current list.

  11. Wow! Seven books read in a week - that is truly impressive, especially to one whose reading has been at a standstill recently. Congratulations to Wyatt's and Annie's teams and to Coach Jon as well.

  12. I have read The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley, and I liked it. It's a shorter/easier read. Yay for 7 books, but even better that they were such great reads. And, I am so glad you got to travel and enjoy time with our family. Have a great week!

  13. Looks like a great classic club spin list! One of my favorite bookish YouTubers loves Elizabeth Taylor so she is one on my list to read but so many of these look good. I'm glad you were able to get to visit family. While we normally are paralyzed by ice and snow the good thing about living in the South is that most of the time it clears up really fast! Have a wonderful week!

    1. You are right; snow and ice here in the south is not like snow and ice for my son in Chicago.

  14. I bought a number of Elizabeth Taylor's books when I saw she was on all these authors books to gift people list, and I'd never even heard of her. I have to say, I've yet to read one of them. Maybe I should try. I love Maugham but his Tales from the East are my fav.

  18. That's great that you were able to make the family visit work in spite of the weather.

We enjoyed a kids' basketball game last week. The 4th graders that we were rooting for won, too!

  19. Thanks for telling us the Classics spin is tomorrow. I've never participated but I'm like "Why not?" and quickly updated my Sunday Salon post with my list. As for your list, I've only read The Day of the Triffods and loved it so of course I'm hoping the roll tomorrow is 12 so that you will be forced to read it. Ha ha.

I'm glad you got to visit the kids and grandkids!

  20. How wonderful that you got to spend time with your family and see your grandchildren play basketball. I am just getting into reading classics, so I've decided to read The Wind in the Willows sometime this month.

  21. I read (and loved!) both Travels With a Donkey and The Song of the Lark for the Classics Club, but I hope you get that J. Frank Dobie--I want to hear about that one.

I have read Day of the Triffids but it’s been decades, I know I liked it though.

  35. Congrats to both your grandkids on their wins! How nice that you were able to get out to East Texas despite the weather. We were set to fly out to Austin on Friday but our daughter wanted us to meet them in Montana for the President's Day weekend and we were only going to do one or the other so we canceled the Austin trip. Good luck on your challenge!

  36. Glad the snow didn't prevent your visit. Looks like the kids had fun playing in it, plus a great weekend of basketball!

  37. What a fun weekend! I am glad you were still able to go despite the snow. Congratulations on everyone's wins! Yay for getting in lots of reading! Looks like you read some good books. The Haunted Bookshop is a good one! And short, so it'll be a quick read when you read it. I hope you enjoy The Weary Blues. Have a good week, Deb.

  38. Glad you had a fun weekend with the family and the snow. I've read The Song of the Lark about 20 years ago and enjoyed it. I mentioned on Tina's blog that I'm not a big fan of the classics, but I do like Cather. I've read so many of hers, but haven't read A Lost Lady.

  39. I have read Lost Horizon, and loved it! It was recommended by my aunt, so it was a long, long time ago that I read it. I also read Out of the Silent Planet, along with the other two in a trilogy, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. Also well-loved. And I've read The Loved One -- it was just mad! Hilarious! It helped form my sometimes lugubrious sense of humor! I'd love to do the Classics Spin challenge, but I just don't have time for it right now. Maybe next year.
