What is the Spin?
It’s easy. At your blog, before next Sunday, February 8th, create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list.
This is your Spin List.
You have to read one of these twenty books by the end of the spin period.
On Sunday, February 8th, The Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by Sunday, March 29th.
Let's see who can make it the whole way and finish their spin book!
I have a lot of books to read on my latest Classics Club list. Let's see where the needle stops.
So here is my list.
1. Coronado's Children: Tales of Lost Mines and Buried Treasure by J. Frank Dobie
2. The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes
3. Lost Horizon by James Hilton
4. The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley
5. Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes by Robert Louis Stevenson
6. Bevis: The Story of a Boy by Richard Jefferies
7. The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham

18. Stowaway to Mars by John Wyndham
19. A Lost Lady by Willa Cather
20. Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
Have you read any of these?
Do you recommend any of these?

Great reading list! I have read around half the books on your list.
ReplyDeleteCongratularions to the team winners and coach!
It is quite possible that you recommended them and that is how they found their way to my list.
DeleteI have read three of the books on your list: Far from the Madding Crowd, The Razor’s Edge and The Day of the Triffids.,
ReplyDeleteI wonder if any of those were great reads.
DeleteGlad the weather cooperated so that you could go see your grandchildren’s games. Adding What Mad Universe to my TBR list. Good luck on your Spin Challenge!
ReplyDeleteIf nothing else, What Mad Universe is an appropriate title for how I feel right now.
DeleteHa! Yes we agree on that!
DeleteOoh, on our Classics Spin list, have you read Parnassus on Wheels already? IIRC I liked that a lot more than The Haunted Bookshop, though honestly I'm having trouble remembering The Haunted Bookshop.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great week for reading!
I have read Parnassus on Wheels and I enjoyed it a lot. Good to know that you liked it a lot more than The Haunted Bookshop.
DeleteWhat a winning weekend for your family all the way around! You are crushing your challenges Deb. Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThe challenges seem easy this year.
DeleteDeb, how nice that you guys were able to get to the grandkids and also see their games. Fun, fun! Lovely pictures of them. And, the weather is now cooperating. It's supposed to be above 80 here today (maybe). I'm OK with that. LOL
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed some low 70s weather this weekend, and it was great.
DeleteStevenson's Travels with a Donkey is one of my favorite travel books, ever since I read it in high school.
ReplyDeleteI have a beautiful old copy of that book. Since the spinner did not stop on it this time, I will try to read it in July for Paris in July. I think part of it takes place in France.
DeleteI have Lost Horizon on my spin list. Read it deacdes ago in college but it's on my list for Classics. Good luck and I hope you get the book you are hoping for.
ReplyDeleteLost Horizon is a book I've wanted to read for a long time. I'm hesitant, though, worried it will be beyond me.
DeleteI have read four of yours (2,3,11,12) and enjoyed all of them. I hope you get the Hilton. I read two of his for my first CC list and have a third on my current list.
ReplyDeleteI am going to read the Hilton this year!
DeleteDear Deb, I love ❤️ photos of children playing in the snow ❄️
ReplyDeleteThey had fun!
DeleteWow! Seven books read in a week - that is truly impressive, especially to one whose reading has been at a standstill recently. Congratulations to Wyatt's and Annie's teams and to Coach Jon as well.
ReplyDeleteI was inspired by the announcement of the American Library Association awards.
DeleteI have read The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley, and I liked it. It's a shorter/easier read. Yay for 7 books, but even better that they were such great reads. And, I am so glad you got to travel and enjoy time with our family. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of The Haunted Bookshop in my TBR that a friend gave me. It is a short read. Thanks for the recommendation, Cindy.
DeleteLooks like a great classic club spin list! One of my favorite bookish YouTubers loves Elizabeth Taylor so she is one on my list to read but so many of these look good. I'm glad you were able to get to visit family. While we normally are paralyzed by ice and snow the good thing about living in the South is that most of the time it clears up really fast! Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteYou are right; snow and ice here in the south is not like snow and ice for my son in Chicago.
DeleteI bought a number of Elizabeth Taylor's books when I saw she was on all these authors books to gift people list, and I'd never even heard of her. I have to say, I've yet to read one of them. Maybe I should try. I love Maugham but his Tales from the East are my fav.
ReplyDeleteI read Of Human Bondage last year, and I was surprised to see how much I liked it. I should add Tales from the East to my longlist.
DeleteI am playing along with the Classics Club Spin for the first time ever! I am a bit scared to be honest!
ReplyDeleteYay! Good luck! If your spin result doesn't work out, try something else.
DeleteI'm glad you had a chance to visit with your family. You did really well reading. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteMe, too!
DeleteWhat a happy basketball player! Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteShe is so happy to be playing ball.
DeleteThat's great that you were able to make the family visit work in spite of the weather.
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed a kids' basketball game last week. The 4th graders that we were rooting for won, too!
It's always amazing to me when I'm there for a win.
DeleteThanks for telling us the Classics spin is tomorrow. I've never participated but I'm like "Why not?" and quickly updated my Sunday Salon post with my list. As for your list, I've only read The Day of the Triffods and loved it so of course I'm hoping the roll tomorrow is 12 so that you will be forced to read it. Ha ha.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got to visit the kids and grandkids!
I need to go see now which book the spin chose for you.
DeleteHow wonderful that you got to spend time with your family and see your grandchildren play basketball. I am just getting into reading classics, so I've decided to read The Wind in the Willows sometime this month.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great choice.
DeleteI read (and loved!) both Travels With a Donkey and The Song of the Lark for the Classics Club, but I hope you get that J. Frank Dobie--I want to hear about that one.
ReplyDeleteI have that Dobie book as a selection for our naturalist book club coming up this spring.
DeleteWhat a great challenge! I haven't read any of those on your list. I look forward to seeing which one you read! Have a great weekend! :)
ReplyDeleteI try to have some short books on my classics list as well as some longer ones.
DeleteYour grandkids are getting so big; it looks like you all have a great time together. And you are doing really well on your challenges!
ReplyDeleteI feel like the grandkids are growing up way faster than my kids did.
DeleteSounds like you had a fabulous long weekend. Congrats to the kids and the coach! Hope this week is just a fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lori! You know how much fun sports is.
DeleteI sure don't miss the snow, even though all the scenic photos are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI could never live in all that snow.
DeleteSeven books! Wow! I like the look of Miss Eliza's English Kitchen (being from England!).
ReplyDeleteIt's the Feb./March selection of Cook the Books.
DeleteGood wins!! Glad you enjoyed the snow. I didn't even know about the Classics Spin, but I read Animal Farm yesterday!
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that those dystopias feel so relevant now?
DeleteP.S. I thought you'd enjoy this. https://childrensbooksireland.ie/news-events/ten-books-shortlisted-kpmg-childrens-books-ireland-awards-2026
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy this! Thank you for sharing. I love kids' books.
DeleteLovely post (as always). Those wins in basketball made the trip worth it! Glad you had a good time.
ReplyDeleteIt was the first wins for them all!
DeleteCurious to see what your spin title will be! Sounds like a good week and lots of reading always helps!
ReplyDeleteI am excited about reading the collection of poems for Black History Month.
DeleteTexas probably doesn't often have snow days, lol!
ReplyDeletewow 7 books!
I read 6 of your spin list. 4, 5, and 11 are so good!
It snows every other year up in East Texas but here---not so much.
DeleteI’m glad the weather didn’t impede your travel and you got to witness those wins.
ReplyDeleteI have read Day of the Triffids but it’s been decades, I know I liked it though.
I was feeling smug about my own early challenge progress but it’s nothing compared to you!
Wishing you a wonderful week
Don't forget that I cheat to start the year with big numbers.
DeleteCool to see the snow in East Texas! Wow. And I like hearing about all the kids' basketball there -- terrific. Langston Hughes should be great to read -- I will have to look that title up. thanks.
ReplyDeleteI found a copy on the Gutenberg free ebook site.
DeleteI'm so glad you had time with your little guys! Sometimes weather actually DOES cooperate!
ReplyDeleteIt was amazing!
DeleteHope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI shall try for a great week!
DeleteCongrats to both your grandkids on their wins! How nice that you were able to get out to East Texas despite the weather. We were set to fly out to Austin on Friday but our daughter wanted us to meet them in Montana for the President's Day weekend and we were only going to do one or the other so we canceled the Austin trip. Good luck on your challenge!
ReplyDeleteMontana or Austin is a difficult choice.
DeleteGlad you all got some time in the snow! Looks fun.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the snow---in small doses.
DeleteGlad the snow didn't prevent your visit. Looks like the kids had fun playing in it, plus a great weekend of basketball!
ReplyDeleteThey did. Of course there was no school.
DeleteWhat a fun weekend! I am glad you were still able to go despite the snow. Congratulations on everyone's wins! Yay for getting in lots of reading! Looks like you read some good books. The Haunted Bookshop is a good one! And short, so it'll be a quick read when you read it. I hope you enjoy The Weary Blues. Have a good week, Deb.
ReplyDeleteI need to get my copy of The Weary Blues so that I can start reading.
DeleteGlad you had a fun weekend with the family and the snow. I've read The Song of the Lark about 20 years ago and enjoyed it. I mentioned on Tina's blog that I'm not a big fan of the classics, but I do like Cather. I've read so many of hers, but haven't read A Lost Lady.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed every Cather book I've read so far.
DeleteI have read Lost Horizon, and loved it! It was recommended by my aunt, so it was a long, long time ago that I read it. I also read Out of the Silent Planet, along with the other two in a trilogy, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. Also well-loved. And I've read The Loved One -- it was just mad! Hilarious! It helped form my sometimes lugubrious sense of humor! I'd love to do the Classics Spin challenge, but I just don't have time for it right now. Maybe next year.
ReplyDeleteI hope you will join in next year. I've been amazed by all the good books I've discovered through the Classics Club.
