Enormous Wings by Laurie Frankel: Book Beginnings on Fridays, First Line Friday, The Friday 56, and Book Blogger Hop

Today's Featured Book:

Enormous Wings

by Laurie Frankel

Genre: Fiction

Published: May 5, 2026

Page Count: 303 pages

Summary:

At seventy-seven, Pepper Mills is too old to be a stranger in a strange land. She didn’t choose the Vista View Retirement Community of Austin, Texas―that would be her three grown children―but when she grudgingly moves in, she not only makes new friends, she falls in love. Then the exhaustion, vomiting, and confusion start. She fears it’s cancer, dementia, a stroke. But a raft of tests later, the news is even more shocking: She’s pregnant.

BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAY is hosted by Rose City ReaderWhat book are you happy about reading this week? Please share the opening sentence (or so) on BOOK BEGINNINGS ON FRIDAY! Add the link to your blog or social media post and visit other blogs to see what others are reading.

Happy Friday and welcome to the FIRST LINE FRIDAY, hosted by Reading is My Superpower! It’s time to grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line.

You know how it ends.

Everyone in the whole world knows how it ends.

Of course that's true anyway for all of us, no matter what.

THE FRIDAY 56 is hosted by Anne of Head Full of Books. To play, open a book and turn to page 56 (or 56% on your e-reader). Find a sentence or two and post them, along with the book title and author. Then link up on Head Full of Books and visit others in the linky.

When Alice annouced she was adopting twins, I had reminded her of this conversation. "Babies need their laundry washed and their meals cooked and their clothes shopped for and their egos stroked all the time, you know. You have to clean their bathroom sometimes several times a day."

"But only for eighteen years," said Alice. "Then they're grown up and off your to-do list."

I couldn't tell her how untrue that was. Some things you just can't know until they actually happen to you.

The purpose of THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, and befriend other bloggers. THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer

Are you team dog-eared pages or strictly no creases? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee-Addicted Writer)

Sometimes I dog-ear. Sometimes I keep a book pristine.

  1. Strictly pristine over here. I can't fathom dog-earring a book page. It just hurts. Lol.

  2. Maybe a retirement community is not so bad after all!

  3. I’m definitely strictly Team Bookmark, but I think a lot of readers probably fall somewhere in the middle like that 😊 Happy Reading—and hop over to my post when you get a chance!

  4. Well, that's quite the description! Makes those places sound like they have some potential!

  5. That sounds like an interesting book. I do like to read about older characters.

I'm team pristine. I think as I get older I get worse 😂

    Have a great weekend!

  6. I have so completely switched to Kindle books that I forgot about bookmarks and dogears! I have no compunction about “marking” an ebook, though I do turn off the “popular highlights” feature.

  8. I enjoyed one of Laurie Frankel's books (This Is How It Always Is), and I love books with older protagonists, so this one's on my radar.

No dog-earring, but I do use removeable Post-It flags to mark favorite passages.

  9. I switched to Kindle several years ago - no more room on the bookshelves of my house. But back in the day when I read physical books, I always used a bookmark. And I, too, enjoy books with older protagonists. Maybe because I can more easily relate to them.

  10. Well, I wasn't expecting that summary. I enjoyed Laurie Frankel's book about having a trans-gender child. I bet I'll like this one, too.

  13. Suddenly pregnant at that age would be a horrible shock.

Bookmarks. I’ve gotten library books which were dog-eared and it makes me so mad!
