What is the Sunday Salon?
The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.
My dad's wife, Rosa, celebrated her 97th birthday, and we went to a baby shower for our soon-to-arrive great-nephew, Cooper, and the birthday party of our great-nephew, Jack, 2, last week. I went to my swimming class a couple of times, and it felt good to be back in the pool with my friends. I'm now an official member of the Flamingos, called the Flams for short, a 30-year-old writing group that meets every Friday in Galveston.
What I Read Last Week:
South to America:
A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation
by Imani Perry (Nonfiction)
What I'm Reading Now:
The Book of Birds: A Field Guide to Wonder and Loss by Robert Macfarlane (Nonfiction)
Make Life Happier by Mark Williamson (Nonfiction)
A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson (Nonfiction)
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (Fiction)
The Solitary Summer by Elizabeth von Arnim (Fiction)
The Little Town on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder (Children's Fiction)
What I Posted Last Week Here at Readerbuzz:

I do yearly challenges, but I also like to do perpetual challenges. Last week, I worked hard on one of my perpetual challenges, the 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up challenge. Last week, I read some of these books I've found on Internet Archive, a library of books that you can read for an hour at a time online. Here's what I read last week:
The Lark and the Laurel by Barbara Willard
The Little Captain and the Pirate Treasure by Paul Biegel
Hurrah for St. Trinian's by Ronald Searle
Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver by Michael Ende
Los suenos del sapo by Javier Villafañe (in Spanish)
El sapo que quería ser estrella by Oscar Alfaro (in Spanish)
Tatu and Patu in Helsinki by Aino Havukainen
Cuentos pintado y morales by Rafael Pombo (in Spanish)
Mi reino por uno caballo by Ana Maria Machado (in Spanish)
Now I need to find and read the last 184 books I have left on the list.

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:
Good Thing #1:
I added two more library cards to my collection,
one from Georgia and one from North Carolina.
Good Thing #2:
We had nine inches of rain last week,
but we were dry, and the water quickly soaked into the ground.
Good Thing #3:
It was fun to get ready for the 20 Books of Summer
last week, and to see what all the other participants are reading.
I ended up adding a couple of good books to my list
from ideas others had listed.
How did your week go?
Did you read anything you would recommend?

When you say that you added library cards to your collection, does that mean that you actually became a member of these libraries?
ReplyDeleteI ask initially for a working card, but if the librarian is reluctant to give me a working card, I ask for an inactive card.
DeleteYour reaing lists are always spectacular. So many different types of books and authors.

ReplyDelete(I still seem to be nameless but maybe I’m not clueless)
That is quite the collection of library cards a lot of rain at one time! Have a great week ahead.
ReplyDeleteYou're a social butterfly this week -- and it all sounds fun! I'm glad your ground could absorb the rain -- that's a lot. And I'm glad you stayed dry! The card collection is fun!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a great time! Swim class and writing both are awesome activities. Hopefully I can head to the pool at some point. I love swimming!
ReplyDeleteJust 184 left? Wow, you're doing really well with that!
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous of your library cards, haha.
Love your library card collection! I never thought of doing that. I do have a card from three local library systems. Ha! Glad you guys got rain. We did as well. It has been needed. Have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteYay for another two library cards and a great week!
ReplyDeleteDeb, you have a great library card collection! The book "Make Life Happier" is one book I would enjoy reading! As well, the walk in the woods and birds!
ReplyDeleteThe library card collection looks like fun to collect. Sounds like you had another busy week. Hope this is a good week for you.
ReplyDeleteOMG, a cool library card collection!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the upcoming 184 books, lol.
And congrats to the new Flamingo!
I never thought of collecting libraries; that’s a fascinating hobby. I guess I never imagined that libraries would send them to collectors like that. I like it.
ReplyDeleteI’ve noticed that “South to America” book before, but you’re the first I’ve seen read it. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on it because I’ve found a number of authors come to some strange conclusions in similar books. I read A Walk in the Woods years ago and remember really enjoying it. I miss having a new Bill Bryson book to look forward to every year or so.
And I thought having three library cards was a lot. LOL. That's a cool collection to have! Sounds like you've been having a good mix of family and friend time! Have a great week. :)
ReplyDeleteBirthdays and babies and library cards and reading great books, there’s just so much to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to collect library cards from different places, that would never occur to me! I hope you have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteI, too, had never thought to collect library cards and cheers on your collection. I still have one or two from my university days (mid- to late 1980s) -- at least I think they might be in a "miscellaneous" box I brought over during my last move. I never got a card in Thailand although I lived quite close to a lending library. There is one public library in Siem Reap -- an open-air bungalow of sorts but I am dying to pay them a visit (and see if I can get a card!). There are also extensive libraries near the university I just started working for -- one is under the auspices of the United States Government and the other is the Center for Khmer Studies. I also hope to check these out in the near future. Cheers and Happy Sunday.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the Flamingos! I am envious of your pool time. Our aquatic center opens here on the 6th and I hope to go often with my grands.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week!
A 97th birthday and a baby shower - opposite ends of the age spectrum! A library card collection is very cool. So glad the 9 inches of rain didn’t cause flooding.
ReplyDeleteMultiple birthday parties, baby showers, and more: it sounds like a full week.
ReplyDeleteBirthdays and baby showers, how fun! Also, your library card collection is impressive!
ReplyDeleteSeeing your list has reminded me that before I got long covid - I was intending to get hold of Notes on a Small Island by Bill Bryson! I'll see about tracking it down over the summer when I should have more time to listen to books while decluttering and sorting out the house! Best of luck with the writing group - I recall my days teaching Creative Writing with huge affection, it was the dream job:)).
ReplyDeleteThe Flamingos sounds so fun!
ReplyDeleteThat's quite a collection of library cards! Do you have to pay a yearly fee for cards from other states? I'm wondering how to find libraries that offer that option... Happy Birthday to Rosa!
ReplyDeleteSwimming sounds fantastic this time of year. I think we are on the same latitude....meaning hot and humid. Great books you mentioned here. A big Thank You for the birthday card!! Great surprise!!
ReplyDeleteYay for adding more library cards! My daughter and I add more when we travel, too. We share the Libby app. 9 inches of rain?!! That's a lot! It rained off and on all last week here, too, but it wasn't near as much. I like your 20 Books of Summer challenge! Who is hosting?
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a lot of rain in a short amount of time. We get maybe 6 inches of rain a year here in Las Vegas.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lot of rain. We do get lot of rain here too but especially in rainy season.
ReplyDeleteI've not read The Good Earth - or any Buck Will add to the list....
