What is the Sunday Salon?
The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.
My dad's wife, Rosa, celebrated her 97th birthday, and we went to a baby shower for our soon-to-arrive great-nephew, Cooper, and the birthday party of our great-nephew, Jack, 2, last week. I went to my swimming class a couple of times, and it felt good to be back in the pool with my friends. I'm now an official member of the Flamingos, called the Flams for short, a 30-year-old writing group that meets every Friday in Galveston.

I do yearly challenges, but I also like to do perpetual challenges. Last week, I worked hard on one of my perpetual challenges, the 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up challenge. Last week, I read some of these books I've found on Internet Archive, a library of books that you can read for an hour at a time online. Here's what I read last week:

Now I need to find and read the last 184 books I have left on the list.
I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:
Good Thing #1:
I added two more library cards to my collection,
one from Georgia and one from North Carolina.
Good Thing #2:
We had nine inches of rain last week,
but we were dry, and the water quickly soaked into the ground.
Good Thing #3:
It was fun to get ready for the 20 Books of Summer
last week, and to see what all the other participants are reading.
I ended up adding a couple of good books to my list
from ideas others had listed.

When you say that you added library cards to your collection, does that mean that you actually became a member of these libraries?
ReplyDeleteI ask initially for a working card, but if the librarian is reluctant to give me a working card, I ask for an inactive card.

Love your library card collection! I never thought of doing that. I do have a card from three local library systems. Ha! Glad you guys got rain. We did as well. It has been needed. Have a good weekend!

I never thought of collecting libraries; that’s a fascinating hobby. I guess I never imagined that libraries would send them to collectors like that. I like it.
ReplyDeleteI’ve noticed that “South to America” book before, but you’re the first I’ve seen read it. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on it because I’ve found a number of authors come to some strange conclusions in similar books. I read A Walk in the Woods years ago and remember really enjoying it. I miss having a new Bill Bryson book to look forward to every year or so.
And I thought having three library cards was a lot. LOL. That's a cool collection to have! Sounds like you've been having a good mix of family and friend time! Have a great week. :)

ReplyDeleteI, too, had never thought to collect library cards and cheers on your collection. I still have one or two from my university days (mid- to late 1980s) -- at least I think they might be in a "miscellaneous" box I brought over during my last move. I never got a card in Thailand although I lived quite close to a lending library. There is one public library in Siem Reap -- an open-air bungalow of sorts but I am dying to pay them a visit (and see if I can get a card!). There are also extensive libraries near the university I just started working for -- one is under the auspices of the United States Government and the other is the Center for Khmer Studies. I also hope to check these out in the near future. Cheers and Happy Sunday.

A 97th birthday and a baby shower - opposite ends of the age spectrum! A library card collection is very cool. So glad the 9 inches of rain didn’t cause flooding.

ReplyDeleteSeeing your list has reminded me that before I got long covid - I was intending to get hold of Notes on a Small Island by Bill Bryson! I'll see about tracking it down over the summer when I should have more time to listen to books while decluttering and sorting out the house! Best of luck with the writing group - I recall my days teaching Creative Writing with huge affection, it was the dream job:)).

ReplyDeleteYay for adding more library cards! My daughter and I add more when we travel, too. We share the Libby app. 9 inches of rain?!! That's a lot! It rained off and on all last week here, too, but it wasn't near as much. I like your 20 Books of Summer challenge! Who is hosting?
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a lot of rain in a short amount of time. We get maybe 6 inches of rain a year here in Las Vegas.
