Thankful...

Today, I am thankful for...

...Christ, who sets the example for me, who turns the other cheek to hatred, who cares for the poor and the sinner, who reminds me every day to lay down my judgment and my anger and my desire for revenge and my jealousy and to simply love.

...all the people in my life, both people I admire and adore, and people who offer opportunities for me to choose love over hate.

...the beauty of this world, the big and the small.

...my work, where I can share truth and love and beauty with children, and where children give me back hope.

...the imagination, which can transport me and change me.

...laughter, for this, too, shall pass.

I am thankful.

Neck-Deep in Fiction Picture Books

Reading the Cybils

Yes, this is what it looks like when you attempt to read 253 fiction picture books and board books for the Cybils Award. I wanted to stack all the books up into one huge pile, but I've got them so nicely sorted (ha!) here that I couldn't bear to mess up my organization. I currently have over 150 books checked out from four libraries and I'm steadily acquiring the books I just couldn't find from publishers. I have exactly fifty books left to read and a little less than five weeks to come up with my favorites. This is an incredibly exhausting, incredibly fun adventure.

What Did I Finish This Week?

Of course you mean what did I finish other than the Cybils I'm reading night and day, day and night, right? I'm making steadily progress in all of my nonfiction reads. I finished Everyone Loves Paris and Start Where You Are: A Journal for Self-Exploration. I'm halfway through with my other five reads: Am I Alone Here? Notes on Reading to Live and Living to Read; The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread; How to Travel Without Seeing: Dispatches from the New Latin America; NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity; and White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America. If all goes well, I should finish all of these this week during my time off school.

Week 3: (Nov 14 – 18) – (Sarah) Book Pairing:
This week, pair up a nonfiction book with another book.

Now this is exactly what I like to do in my reading. I read one book that leads to another book. That book leads to another book, and so on, and so on.

Here are some of my favorite book trails....
Orphan Train led to Train to Somewhere by Eve Bunting

My Mrs. Brown to Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris to Girl in Dior

Mary Karr's Lit to Almost Catholic

The Sweet Life in Paris to Paris, My Sweet

Julia Child's My Life in France to Bon Appetit: The Delicious Life of Julia Child

I'll be off now to get some reading done!

What is the Sunday Salon? Imagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! Orlando's in Taos: The Best Mexican Food in New Mexico?

Books That Should Have Never Been Made into Movies

Why do movie people do it? Why do they take a wonderful book and decide it must be made into a movie? Disappointment is inevitable.

It happens again and again.

I wish I could demonstrate against this. Carry signs and everything. I wish I could make a law against it. Go before Congress. I wish I could find that doing this damaged people and these moviemakers will now have to pay millions and millions of dollars in compensation.

I feel strongly about this, folks.

Here are some movies I will never watch:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (starring Jim Carrey)

Ender's Game

The Cat in the Hat

The Lightning Thief

Where the Wild Things Are

Dune

I Am Legend

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Pippi Longstocking

A Wrinkle in Time

My Week in Books: Nonfiction November

It's Nonfiction November and I've vowed to read nothing but nonfiction this month. To that end, I've started eight nonfiction books that I hope to read this month. So far, I've finished only one, but I'm still hopeful I can finish the others despite the huge number of Cybils fiction books I'm also trying to read. Here's what I'm hoping to finish this month:

Week 2: (Nov 7 – 11) – (Rachel) Choosing Nonfiction
What are you looking for when you pick up a nonfiction book?
I would rather read a bad nonfiction book than I would a mediocre fiction book. Why is that? I don't know.
Of course my favorite nonfiction is good nonfiction. I will read almost any kind of narrative nonfiction.
Do you have a particular topic you’re attracted to?
I love books about happiness, moving-and-starting-over books, books about spirituality, travel stories, foodie stories, memoirs, doctor stories, books that help explain what makes people do the things they do, stories set in Italy, stories set in Paris, and history stories.
I never read celebrity memoirs or self-help or textbooks.

What are you reading today?
