Searching for Italy, Readerbuzz Edition: Osteria il Melograno in Terrugia, Italy

Our trip to Italy is inspired by the Stanley Tucci series, Searching for Italy, in which Stanley (I think he would want me to call him that) visits the twenty regions of Italy in search for the best foods. 

We plan to visit two regions during our three-week trip to Italy, Piedmont and Puglia. Our first stop is Piedmont where we stay in a house in the country...



Our routine in Italy is to eat a big lunch at midday and a small dinner at home in the early evening.

We decide on our first day in Italy to spend time close to where we are staying. For lunch, we drive to the nearby village of Terrugia. Like most of the villages we visit, the streets are narrow and curving. When we arrive at the restaurant, Osteria il Melograno, it looks closed. We call upon Google Translate to help us and we are able to figure out that the sign on the restaurant says it is open for lunch...ring the bell. So we ring the bell.

A sleepy-looking waiter greets us, takes us to a lovely table outdoors, and helps us with our order. He gradually becomes more disclosing---he wants to learn English better, he tells us, but he wants an English accent, not an American one. He likes the south of Italy because of its slow pace. He recommends some other wonderful places to visit in the Piedmont region. And, best of all, he suggests a wonderful local wine, a Nebbiolo.

We enjoy flan with black truffles and ravioli with hazelnuts, made with local ingredients.
