The Astral Library
by Kate Quinn
Genre: Speculative Fiction
Published: February 17, 2026
Page Count: 304 pages
Summary:
Alexandria “Alix” Watson has learned one lesson from her barren childhood in the foster-care system: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and knowing college is a pipe dream, Alix takes nightly refuge in the high-vaulted reading room at the Boston Public Library, escaping into her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of far-off lands. Until the day she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless, acerbic guardian of a hidden library where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives...inside their favorite books.
The Librarian takes a dazzled Alix under her wing, but before she can escape into the pages of her new life, a shadowy enemy emerges to threaten everyone the Astral Library has ever helped protect. Aided by a dashing costume-shop owner, Alix and the Librarian flee through the Regency drawing rooms of Jane Austen to the back alleys of Sherlock Holmes and the champagne-soaked parties of The Great Gatsby as danger draws inexorably closer. But who does their enemy really wish to destroy—Alix, the Librarian, or the Library itself?
I was doing poverty math the day my life fell apart.
THE FRIDAY 56 is hosted by Anne of Head Full of Books. To play, open a book and turn to page 56 (or 56% on your e-reader). Find a sentence or two and post them, along with the book title and author. Then link up on Head Full of Books and visit others in the linky.
...I was almost relieved to look up and see the Librarian standing there with her tablet and her glasses and her cardigan, not looking at all like the semi-ageless guardian of an astral-plane book sanctuary.
I'm halfway through the book, and it's all I hoped for. I like this speculative-fiction Kate Quinn better than historical-fiction Kate Quinn; the characters are jaunty and seriously flawed and fun in Astral Library, and I keep thinking of people I know to recommend it to.
The purpose of THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, and befriend other bloggers. THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer.
If you had to, would you pass your book collection on to someone special? If not, what would you prefer your family or friends do with your books after you’re gone? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee-Addicted Writer)
When Grandpap Frankeny died, we grandkids were all allowed to choose three books from his collection. That's a nice tradition.

You described it well. Speculative fiction.
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice tradition! I plan to leave mine to my niece and nephew. I'd hope they'd maybe keep a title or two for themselves but hopefully we're a long way from that happening!
ReplyDeleteHere's my BBH
Have a GREAT day!

A librarian with with her glasses and cardigan was a great influence in my life. She always instructed me to wash my hands before touching the books and.that symbolic reverence still guides my behaviour.
ReplyDeleteI love that tradition. If I haven’t already gifted my books, they be donated to a library or a community organization. Happy Reading!
ReplyDeleteI am on the library waiting list for The Astral Library. I am currently 16 with an approximate 8 week wait. Knowing my luck it will become available when I don't have the time to read it!
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice tradition to chose 3 books. My kids may have mine otherwise my sister.
Have a great weekend!

I had to do a double-take when I saw The Astral Library already listed on HeadFullOfBooks - I almost did this one!
ReplyDeleteLove this book. One of those speculative fiction stories I wish was real.
Glad to know you are enjoying this one. Kate Quinn is so readable. I haven't read any speculative fiction by her so I am looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteI've come across The Astral Library in a few online bookstores. The cover is striking, but just judging the blurb, it probably wouldn't be a book for me.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday!
I never think about what will happen after I die. It’s not my problem.
ReplyDeleteI really want to try this one. I love this author and while a bit outside of my comfort zone the premise is so intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI'm very much looking forward to reading The Astral Library. Good to know that you are liking it so far. As to my books, well, I'd be happy for any family or friends to take their picks. The, and I suspect my daughter would know this, donation to my library or to a local library would be my choice.
