The Sunday Salon: Spring Fling at Quintana Beach with Warblers and Tanagers and Orioles

I am delighted that you joined us here at the
Sunday SalonWelcome!

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

I rested for a day after doing so much traveling in March, and then I got busy again attending a family reunion for my husband's family, going to our naturalist club meeting, volunteering at Spring Fling as a host for visitors coming to the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory to see migrating birds, and learning more about Emily Dickinson at my class.

Yes, it took me three months, but I finally finished The Brothers Karamazov this week.

What I Read Last Week:

The Brothers Karamozov by Fyodor Dostoevsky (Classic)

What I'm Reading Now:

The Book of Birds: A Field Guide to Wonder and Loss
written by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris (Nature Nonfiction)

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:

I saw these beautiful birds at the bird sanctuary this week while I volunteered at the host station...

Good Thing #1:
Swainson's Warbler

Good Thing #2:
Prothonatary Warbler

Good Thing #3:
Scarlet Tanager

Weekend linkup spots are listed below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

I hope you will join the linkup for Sunday Salon below.

  1. I love the scarlet tanager! What a beautiful bird. On the rare occasion that I see one, I really feel happy. As a small child I had a bird book, and this is the one I remember the most.

  2. Of the birds you show, it it fairly easy to see Scarlet Tanager here, Prothonotary Warbler is possible in the southern part of the province, but Swainson’s Warbler - never. It has eluded me even when I have been in places where it occurs.

  3. I do not see a photo in image 1 (only a ?) but of the remaining two the Scarlet Tanager is the one I’d like to see most. It’s absolutely beautiful. Have a great week Deb!

  4. The warblers are passing through our area now. My big sighting of the week was a rare visitor, the Black-throated Gray warbler that is more typically seen farther west. It was a first for me and found in my own backyard! Needless to say, it made my week.

  8. Congratulations on finishing The Brother's Karamazov! I don't have bird pictures from this week, but I did get a few pictures of my Mom's pet squirrel, she had been feeding it over the years and it was very used to her and her space. Even though she hadn't planted a garden this year he was still enjoying the fruits of her labor from past years.

  9. Oh, I love that scarlet tanager! Such a beautiful bird. We are seeing more birds at the feeders this month, especially crossbills and chickadees. I had to scare a woodpecker away from the house a couple of times, as it was pecking at our siding. Hopefully, he flew off to a tree where there are plenty of bugs to have rather than cause damage to our house. Congrats on completing that big book! I'm still plodding along with The Winds of War. Maybe I'll get a few chapters in this afternoon when the rain arrives. Have a good weekend, Deb!

  10. The scarlet tanager is one bird I'm hoping to see one day. I know they exist around here. We've had so many birds visit our balcony this year. There's one finch (I assume it's the same one) that visits daily, multiple times a day. One day last week, she brought a friend. I've named them Blossom and Bud. The cats have really enjoyed watching them and talking with them from indoors. :)

  18. What fun to be part of the Spring Fling! I haven't been on a birding trip in a long time. Last time I went was in October to Cape May for the Monarch Butterfly migration and then for a quick trip around for birding. Have a great week!

  19. I love all of your good things! I saw a Scarlet Tanager the summer I found out I was pregnant with Wyatt. I always think of those birds and think about that together. :)

  20. A whole day? LOL
The birds that frequent our backyard are beginning to move on since the autumn weather seems to have finally arrived. I’m glad the miner birds are fewer, they tend to stomp around on our tin roof and are so noisy in the morning.

Wishing you a happy reading week

  21. The birds especially the Scarlet one are so great to see, Wow! And congrats on finishing Karamazov. That's a hard novel. And I think Starting Over books are good to revisit now .... I like to start over what's going on in the world.

  23. I've been seeing a lot of Cedar Waxwings, Yellow-Rumped Warblers, Western Bluebirds, and Robins here! I've never seen the Waxwings here so it was exciting. I love your Scarlet Tanger! Not sure we have them here. So nice that you volunteer at a bird sanctuary! Have a great week, Deb!
