I'm not much of a series reader.
Still, there are some series I have loved...
The Lord of the Rings
No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich
A.J. Jacobs attempts to live a year following a guideline
Hank the Cowdog
Edward Eager's Tales of Magic
Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems
Marilynne Robinson's Gilead series
The Poldark series (first three books)
All Creatures Great and Small series
The Oz books
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each Tuesday That Artsy Reader Girl assigns a topic and then post her top ten list that fits that topic. You’re more than welcome to join her and create your own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well. Feel free to put a unique spin on the topic to make it work for you! Please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own post so that others know where to find more information.
I read The year of living biblically which I liked. But I don't think I read any series! Though if I found one that I enjoyed that would be lovely.
ReplyDeleteOoh nice picks! Lots of new to me ones but some I'm familiar with by name at least!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
I read the OZ books last year as part of a readathon and I've read most of the old James Herriot books, but that was years ago. I enjoyed the original TV series.

The only one that I've read is the Stephanie Plum series. There are some others that I have read one or more books in. I really want to read the Gilead series though.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, there are two types of series. The kind I like best has one story arc that’s continued through a few planned books, with a defined and expected final story. (Examples: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter).
ReplyDeleteThe other kind just keeps following a character or set of characters through adventures that in most cases become repetitive and sometimes annoying. As a kid, I couldn’t stop reading the Nancy Drew series, which is the most extreme one that I know as it’s been continued by changing authors for nearly 100 years now. I still can’t resist a new book about Bruno Chief of Police or about Inspector Brunetti. But at some point, the author seems to lose their mojo.

You are right. I tend to dislike the first kind of series because I feel like I've been tricked when I get to the end of the book but I must buy the next book to find out what happens. The second kind of series starts strong but quickly can grow tiresome.
DeleteMost of my favorite series are mysteries but I have read some books (not all) in many of these -- All Creatures, Alex. McC, Smith, Evanovich, etc. Try as I may (three times) I can't seem to get past the first chapters of "Gilead." Maybe this winter.
ReplyDeleteAhh, yeah! AJ Jacobs is fun. I've been reading him since I first started my book blog back in '07!
ReplyDeleteThe Lord of the Rings Trilogy is one that I still hope to get to one day :) I'm a little nervous about it but I hope that I'll enjoy this classic!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the Stephanie Plum series! There were a few rough books in there, but the last one left me absolutely gobsmacked. Hahaha.
ReplyDeleteHere is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
The Lord of the Rings is such an immersive read!
ReplyDeleteNice list. I used to love the Stephanie Plum series. I don't know why I stopped reading, but I do want to go back to it. Same with #1 Ladies Detective Agency. Both are good series.
ReplyDeleteI've actually read most of those series. I do enjoy series. My favorite would have to be "The Lord of the Rings" which I read and reread in my twenties. By the way, I see you are currently reading "Butterflies of Houston and Southeast Texas," a book that I refer to frequently.
ReplyDeleteI’m going through it very slowly.
DeleteI heartily agree with The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and would gladly spend time with almost anything McCall Smith wrote. Have you read any of his other books, the ones set in Scotland? Very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI have read a couple of them.
DeleteStephanie Plum 🙌 It makes me so happy when I see that one on lists. It's one of my favorites, but I completely forgot to add it to this week's topic.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely some fun series here. I read a few of the Stephanie Plum books, but I kind of lost interest in that one. Only read one of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and can't remember why I didn't go back to it. Probably because there are lots and lots of mystery series - ha! Did you know that? LOL
ReplyDeleteI need to read the whole Gilead series, which will probably mean I should reread the first book. But what an opportunity for joy.
ReplyDeleteI used to read LOTR on a yearly basis so you know I love that one lol. I haven't read any of the others, but The Year of Living Biblically sounds like a fun and interesting read. I'm gonna add that one to my wishlist.
ReplyDeleteI love the variety on your list! I love Janet Evanovich!! I have not made it super far into the series (3 books), but loved each one!
ReplyDeleteThose all sound like good series.
ReplyDeleteWe love Piggie and Elephant, such fun kids books! I am now very curious about A.J. Jacobs, are the books good?
ReplyDeleteThey are very silly!
DeleteI've seen the Lord of the Rings movies, of course, but I haven't read the books. I have read books in the Ladies Detective series (and watched some eps of the TV show) and some Janet Evanovich books (I think) but not enough to call myself reading the series. But you prompted me to look over books I've read (mostly from my blogging era since I don't have to rely on memory for those lol) and list series I've liked. Here's what I listed https://jhohadli.com/2025/10/08/top-ten-more-or-less-okay-more-book-series
ReplyDeleteAll Creatures Great and Small made more than one list this week. Not much of a Tolkien fan. Would love to indulges in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Thanks for sharing, Deb.

I've read LoTR, Oz, and James Herriot's books, but my favorite series is The Chronicles of Narnia.
