I'm Loving the Texas Book Festival

Yes, it rained on me (poured, really) and the venues are so far apart this year that I might have walked the equivalent of a half marathon yesterday, but it's the Texas Book Festival, folks, and I'm here, and I'm loving it.

I'm taking lots of pictures and notes, so look for a post soon.

Week 1: (Oct 31-Nov 4) – (KatieYour Year in Nonfiction: Take a look back at your year of nonfiction and reflect on the following questions – What was your favorite nonfiction read of the year? What nonfiction book have you recommended the most? What is one topic or type of nonfiction you haven’t read enough of yet? What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November?

I've read oodles of nonfiction this year. Some books that I've loved are Train to Crystal City and F is for France and Call the Midwife and Emotional Agility and Bonjour Kale and Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Street of Eternal Happiness and Lab Girl. I also loved Some Writer!: The Story of E.B. White, a children's nonfiction picture book.
My plan for Nonfiction November is to read just nonfiction this month. I'm working on Nothing to Envy, a story about North Korea that is absolutely astonishing, and I've also checked out Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and White Trash: A 400-Year History of Class in America.
Are you planning to participate in Nonfiction November? Have you read any good nonfiction this year?

What are you reading today?

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

  1. Can't wait to hear more about the book festival and always wish there was something like that in my area. I'm reading all nonfiction this month, too. Recently added Train to Crystal City to my wish list, but Nothing to Envy has been on there for years... glad to hear it's good!

    1. I can't believe I knew nothing about the desperate situation of North Korea. Widespread malnutrition in the 90's? I had no idea.

  2. I am in for Nonfiction November as well. Unlike yourself, I have not read a lot of nonfiction this year, or in general really, but I am hoping to pick the genre up more often. I am looking forward to hearing about the book festival. Sounds like fun, rain and all.

  3. I am not reading ALL nonfiction this month, but I am reading American Heiress, about Patty Hearst.

I have Unsinkable (Debbie Reynolds) waiting on my bedroom loveseat (my nightstand is overflowing with books I plan to reread).

The festival sounds great! Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

  5. I thought "Nothing to Envy" was extremely interesting! Another non-fiction favorite was "Boys in the Boat." This month, I'll read "A Woman Among Warlords."

  6. I recently read Patient H.M. -- terrific medical nonfiction. It reminded me of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, one of my favorite nonfiction books. Nothing to Envy is on my TBR!

  9. No nonfiction for me! I'm a devoted reader of fiction. I'll sometimes buy an intriguing nonfiction title but it always languishes on TBR mountain until I donate it. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
