Spring Fling at Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary: We're Here for the Birds

It's a beautiful place. Lots of places to walk. Or climb up high. And it's walking distance from the Gulf of Mexico.

And that's why it's here. Thousands of neotropical birds make a pit stop here after flying for hours nonstop across the Gulf.

We are here for the birds.

Some of them are elusive.

Lesser nighthawk

Northern parula

Others seem to enjoy being the center of attention.

Hooded warbler

Lincoln's sparrow

Step carefully. It's a sanctuary for more than just birds.

Western diamond-back rattlesnake

  2. This spot looks fabulous. My birds seem to have disappeared for a bit. I see them around but for whatever reason, they aren't hanging by my feeder lately. Maybe it's too cold. (30 right now) or there's enough "good stuff" elsewhere. I miss them!

  5. I could barely name a one of them, except maybe the rattlesnake. Great post indeed.

  7. How lovely. I saw a snake in there! I have no idea what kinds of birds but I should look them up and find out!

  8. Oh, yikes! I can only identify the rattlesnake, but the birds are lovely. Do you have a nice birding scope? We have a friend who has one and I think he can use his smart phone with it.

  14. Beautiful! The hooded warbler is my favorite warbler, so cute, and well, the easiest to recognize. Warblers otherwise confuse me a lot, lol
