The Best Animal Stories

Why are there so many great animal stories? Stories about dogs. Stories about horses. Stories about cats. Stories about rabbits. Even stories about wolves or bulls or otters. I love them all.

Here are some of my favorites.

Good Dog, Carl.        The Story of Ferdinand.        Black Beauty.         The Red Pony.

Because of Winn-Dixie.         White Fang.          The Yearling.         The Incredible Journey

Where the Red Fern Grows.         Gentle Ben.         Old Yeller.         Misty of Chincoteague.

The Black Stallion.          Seabiscuit.          Lassie-Come-Home.         Watership Down.

Sounder.         Tarka the Otter.          Marley and Me.         All Creatures Great and Small.

Do you love animal stories like I do?

Have you read any of these?

Do you have favorites I've forgotten?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by
The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each Tuesday That Artsy Reader Girl assigns a topic and then post her top ten list that fits that topic. You’re more than welcome to join her and create your own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well. Feel free to put a unique spin on the topic to make it work for you! Please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own post so that others know where to find more information.

  1. Champion Dog Prince Tom and White Ruff were my childhood favourites.

  2. I'm a huge fan of the Black Stallion movie- it meant a lot to me as a kid- although I've never read the book. I was a huge fan of Lassie too! Old Yeller and Red fern made me cry as a kid, but I imagine that's a common thing. :)

    My daughter loves Winn- Dixie.

  3. The Incredible Journey!! I love that book!! And Lassie of course. I don't think I've cried in any movie as much as I did in Old Yeller. I feel like crying just thinking about it.

Love your graphic Debbie! The border with all the pets are stunning.

  7. I love many of the animals on your list that I forgot to put on my list. Misty, Marley, Ferdinand, and the animals in Incredible Journey (their names escape me though. Is one Chase?)

    1. Luath the Labrador Retriever, Bodger the Bull Terrier, and Tao the Siamese cat. (Had to look these up.)

  8. I've never read Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows. I heard they were sad and I steer clear from sad animal stories. Should I make an exception with those?

    1. If you don't like sad stories, you'd better skip them. My whole class was in tears at the end of Where the Red Fern Grows.

  9. They're not my first read but I've read lots of them. Watership Down and The Incredible Journey were my favorites. I cried at Old Yeller and I adored all the Albert Payson Terhune books about collies (Lad, a Dog!) because I had one! There was a darling one about a raccoon, too, called "Rascal."

  11. I love animal stories even though Where the Red Fern Grows left me emotionally scarred when my third-grade teacher's assistant read it to us. But I included it on my list this week!

I didn't even think about Seabiscuit even though I loved that book.

    Great choices!

  13. What a great assortment! As a "cat lover" I'll have to add Cat in the Hat.

    1. We all like Clifford. I had a huge collection of Cliffords people had given me over the years...maybe thirty of them.

  15. I have read several of those. I guess my favorite would be Watership Down. It is actually my older daughter's absolute favorite book. She rereads it every year as her first book of the year and she collects the various editions of the book. I'm not sure how many she has at this point.

  18. BLACK BEAUTY and MARLEY & ME are both on my list today. I've read most of the others you listed as well. I'm not much of an animal story reader nowadays, but I was as a child.

    Happy TTT!

    1. That was one of the things that amazed me about elementary kids...no one could pass up a good animal story.

  19. So many animal books. Some reminded me of lovely times, like "Ferdinand the Bull". My boys loved Ferdinand.

My TTT comes with a twist this week.

  21. I would add The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, A Dog's Purpose and The Art of Racing in the Rain. Another I can mention (I haven't read it, but I think my brother loved it) is called That Quail, Robert by Margaret Stranger.

  22. There are so many on here I still want to read some day, but Where the Red Fern Grows will always have a special place in my heart. I own my mom's old copy and love the story, and I used to have the movie(s) playing constantly when I was growing up. Because of Winn-Dixie is a similar experience for me.

  23. Marley and Me made me bawl!! What a great list :) Thanks for visiting my TTT

  24. Watership Down is definitely one of my "best books ever." For something lighter, you can't beat Hank the Cowdog series.
