Books Guaranteed to Put an End to Your Book Slump

Here's what works for me...

(1) A kid's book that's clever enough for grownups,
like The Phantom Tollbooth or The Westing Game

(2) A short book or a book with short chapters,
like Mrs. Bridge

(3) A ridiculously long book,
like Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything

(4) A book with more pictures than text,
like Maira Kalman's The Principles of Uncertainty

(5) A browsable book,
like Atlas Obscura

(6) A funny book,
like Where the Sidewalk Ends

(7) A collection of essays or short stories or poems,
like Touchstone Anthology of Contemporary Creative Nonfiction

(8) Nonfiction that you can't stop reading,
like Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

(9) A wise book,
like Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

(10) A book that's worked in the past,
like Anne of Green Gables

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each Tuesday That Artsy Reader Girl assigns a topic and then post her top ten list that fits that topic. You’re more than welcome to join her and create your own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well. Feel free to put a unique spin on the topic to make it work for you! Please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own post so that others know where to find more information.

  4. This book from Robert Fulgum is an all-time favorite of mine. It's like talking to a smart and witty uncle. I'm out of my book slump but I'll surely add these to my list for future reference. Thanks!

  5. I think Bryson is a good slum-fixer in general!

  6. I love love love Where the Sidewalk Ends! Bryson seems quite popular today because I've seen a few of his books mentioned by several posters. I still have a couple of his books on my TBR and I'm looking forward to reading them!

  7. "Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a personal favorite of mine. I discovered it with my children when they were growing up and I still refer to it from time to time.

  8. You've got a bunch of good ones here. I remember reading Where The Sidewalk Ends to my daughter more than once. She loved it. I also remember really liking The Westing Game. I think her elementary school librarian suggested that I try that one - she was prone to place books in my hands when I was over at the school shelving books as a volunteer. And she meant for me to read it, not just for me to read it to my daughter. LOL

  10. Great list, Deb. I bought Falling Up quite a bit back and haven't re-read it yet. I think it's funny that when I was in high school I had enjoyed reading poetry/books like Shel Silverstein, but I had forgotten.

  12. This is such a great list! I never even thought to include browseable books, anthologies, and all the options you've got on here. Also yes, Anne of Green Gables definitely gets me out of a slump!

  13. I love the idea of reading books with short chapters to help guide you out of the slump. I try to rotate genres and formats to keep reading fresh and exciting for me.

  14. YES to The Westing Game and Anne of Green Gables. In fact, I'm probably due for a reread of both of those. And rereading is often my way out of a slump or a book hangover.

  18. Great choices here, Deb. I am lucky in that I don't think I've ever had a book slump, but it's probably because i am always changing it up in genres, length of books etc.
