Under the Eye of the Big Bird by Hiromi Kawakami: Book Beginnings on Fridays, First Line Friday, The Friday 56, and Book Blogger Hop

Today's Featured Book:

Under the Eye of the Big Bird

by Hiromi Kawakami

Genre: Fiction

Published: September 3, 2024

Page Count: 289 pages

Summary:

In the distant future, humans are on the verge of extinction and have settled in small tribes across the planet under the observation and care of "Mothers." Some children are made in factories, from cells of rabbits and dolphins; some live by getting nutrients from water and light, like plants. The survival of the race depends on the interbreeding of these and other alien beings--but it is far from certain that connection, love, reproduction, and evolution will persist among the inhabitants of this faltering new world.

Unfolding over fourteen interconnected episodes spanning geological eons, at once technical and pastoral, mournful and utopic,
Under the Eye of the Big Bird presents an astonishing vision of the end of our species as we know it.

I could not find a quote on either the first page or on page 56 that rang with the quirkiness of this book. The book is emotionally cold, but I like the surprise and the cleverness of the story.

The purpose of THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, and befriend other bloggers. THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer

September 12th - 18th - Are there any books that are considered terrible but you love? (submitted by Snapdragon @ Snapdragon Alcove)

In generally, I come from the other side of the playground: there are a lot of books others love that I consider terrible. I won't give examples. I'm sure many people hate some of my favorites, too.

  1. I feel like we all know of times when we disliked a popular book but are struggling to find the books we love and others hated. I don't usually pay much attention if someone disliked a book I loved. I'll see a goodreads or blogger rating that's low and I will just pass by the review. We all like different things and that's okay.

  2. You make this dystopian novel sound good. I am not a big fan of dystopia (afraid we live in one).

  4. Not every book is going to be a good fit for every reader.

  5. An interesting sounding book. I tend to like most popular books, but there are a few that I've read and I don't understand why so many people like them 😂. I will never just read a book because it's popular, I have to like the sound of it.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. I agree. I don't automatically look for books just because they are best sellers.

  6. It sounds intriguing, although I am not sure it would be something I'd enjoy. Everyone has favorites, I believe, which others wouldn't enjoy at all.

  7. Under the Eye of the Big Bird sounds interesting. I am not sure what I think of the cover.

I was thinking it probably would be easier for me to think of books I didn't care for that other people loved. In fact, two come to mind immediately. It doesn't mean they aren't great books for those who liked them--they just weren't for me.

  8. It feels too close to the despair I'm trying so hard not to give into right now.

    1. I understand. I'm staying away from lots of books right now for that same reason.
