In the fall of her senior year of college, Jordan meets two star students from her 17th-Century Lit class: Sam and Yash. Best friends living off campus in the elegant house of a professor on sabbatical, the boys invite her into their intoxicating world of academic fervor, rapid-fire banter and raucous card games. They nickname her Jordan, and she quickly discovers the pleasures of friendship, love and her own intellectual ambition. But youthful passion is unpredictable, and soon she finds herself at the center of a charged and intricate triangle. As graduation comes and goes, choices made will alter these three lives forever.

Happy Friday and welcome to the FIRST LINE FRIDAY, hosted by Reading is My Superpower! It’s time to grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line.

You knew I'd write a book about you someday. You said once that I'd dredged up the whole hit parade minus you.

I'll never know how you'd tell it.

For me it begins here. Like this.

King, Lily. Heart the Lover, p. 1.

THE FRIDAY 56 is hosted by Anne of Head Full of Books. To play, open a book and turn to page 56 (or 56% on your e-reader). Find a sentence or two and post them, along with the book title and author. Then link up on Head Full of Books and visit others in the linky.

We sit on the porch with our beers.

'You have a real life here, don't you?'

'I do. I imagine you have a real life, too.'

'I don't.'

King, Lily. Heart the Lover, 56%.

After I read the third wow-filled review of Heart the Lover, I felt compelled to try it, and now I know why the wow. This book oozes emotion. In lesser hands, this would be just another soap opera life, but these are not lesser hands.

The purpose of THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, and befriend other bloggers. THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer

October 24th - Will AI ultimately benefit or harm the book industry? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

I do not know. As AI currently exists, I do not like it. It feels derivative, strung together, a second or third serving of what was originally a decent meal, poorly warmed up.

  1. I'm actually quite terrified it will destroy the book industry as we know it and perhaps even more. I am sure there are actual good things AI can do, but I think it's best it stays out of the creative circles and leave that to real people.

  2. I echo Jessica's comment, Deb. It gets pretty scary 😨 when machines and robots 🤖 are replacing humans. Humans are the ones who need to make a living to eat, etc., not robots or machines.

  3. Machines and robots replacing humans, as Linda said, reminded me of the Terminator movies. AI, self awareness, and there can be no good coming from that.

As for the Lily Ling book, Susan and I are doing a buddy read of that one in December. I'm looking forward to it.

  4. The book industry always seems to be jeopardized and then it always seems to come back. Recent years have seen pretty good sales for the industry as a whole in the US. The US book market is projected to generate $24.77 billion in revenue in 2025 — I looked it up.

  5. I'm not a fan of AI in the Arts at all. I think there are still too many unknowns as to how it might evolve and so many people are jumping in without giving it proper thought, whether to accomplish more to try to make a buck. In our Capitalist society, what scares me most are the people who will benefit from its uses at the detriment of humanity all in the name of money. Ugh.

  6. I just checked out this book. I like Lily King's writing style. Even from your quotes I get the same vibe of just great, readable writing.

  8. An interesting sounding book.

AI scares me. I constantly feel watched! I think things and the next minute my Alexa is suggesting things relating to it! My son loves talking to AI on the mobile phones. This is particularly scary as it takes breaths when replying - HOW DOES IT KNOW TO DO THAT?!

    Have a great weekend!
