The Sunday Salon: I'm Shivering in Chicago

Welcome! I am delighted that you joined us here at the
Sunday Salon

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Chicago bound

My younger son, Ben, has lived in Chicago for twelve years, but my husband and I have never dared to travel to Chicago during the cold months.

This year we decided to go for Thanksgiving.

My thoughts? It's cold. No, it's more than cold...And nothing stops my shivering.

How do you folks live in this?

What I Posted Last Week Here at Readerbuzz:

Jenn at Jenn's Bookshelves is hosting the Thankfully Reading Week from November 24 to November 30. Instead of just a weekend, Jenn has made this reading event a full week. The official hashtag we’ll be using is #thankfullyreading. Join in for the weekend or for only a single day. No rules, no pressure! Add your link here.

I plan to participate in the 2025 Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon, hosted by Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer. The event will run from Wednesday, November 26 to Wednesday, December 17. Read or listen to as many holiday or winter themed books as you wish. Share your progress using #2025HOHOHORAT. Take part in at least one challenge and read two books to be eligible for the grand prize. Link up here to join in the fun.

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things, three ways I practice being thankful today and every day.

Good Thing #1:

Tell someone thank you
for something small.

Good Thing #2:

Write down things you are grateful for
each day. It does not have to be
this elaborate.

Good Thing #3:

Send someone a surprise Thank You Note.

Weekend linkup spots are listed below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

I hope you will join the linkup for Sunday Salon below.

  1. The cold of the upper Midwest is incredible! Thank you for being a host November Nonfiction. It was my first time participating and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  2. I can tell you, on the coldest day in the winter, I can dress and stay warm. It is impossible to escape the searing heat (and getting hotter) you have to cope with in Texas. Give me Illinois any day. Their politics are better, too.

  3. Oof, I can't even imagine the cold; I complain about how cold it is here! My sister's in Texas for Thanksgiving with her fiancée's family, so she'll be better off, haha. Hope you've had a good Thanksgiving!

  4. I was worried when you said you were planning to wear a cape rather than a real coat. Chicago is the worst with the wind off the lake, and this weekend is increcible. I hope you do enjoy the reast of your tri

  5. I haven’t been to that part of the world in winter but there are parts of Canada (happily not Vancouver) that also get very cold. I hope you have a great visit and a safe journey home.

  7. Welcome to the frozen north! Your beautiful cape looks like you were ready for it -- but then, we are never ready for it! Still, sounds like a wonderful holiday. Safe travels home.

  9. Dear Deb, I am one who loves ❤️ Winter, snow ❄️ and cold 🥶 weather. Living in Montreal for me is a joy 😊 I just make sure to dress warmly. The only thing I don't like is the ice because there is a risk of falling and accidents. What I have the most difficulty with is our summers, because the 🥵 🔥 heat, humidity and wildfires makes life uncomfortable and dangerous.
Thank you so much for sharing your posts.

  10. The cold in Chicago is special. I cope with St. Louis by staying adapted to it, but the wind and cold in Chicago strikes differently. I hope you managed a nice visit in spite of that!

  11. I lived in the south side of Chicago for 13 years. We just got used to the cold and living in Chi town. I miss it in the summer.

  12. It gets cold enough here for me, I'd never stop shivering, either. Sending a surprise Thank You note would be a delightful way to cheer up someone, and yourself.

  13. What a lovely wrap! You're going in style! Right? Since my recent weight loss, I'm always cold! Brrr. I can't even imagine Chicago's cold! Next year is going to be my year of "Exploring Poetry"; Starlement sounds like another one to read. Thank you for sharing earlier about Thankfully Reading! I sure enjoyed participating. Two simple words can brighten a day: Thank you for sharing! :)

  14. Oh boy. Chicago in the winter? You are braver than I am! I hope you had a wonderful time with your son over Thanksgiving and that the travel all goes smoothly!

  15. Wisconsin is colder and we will have up to 9 inches of snow in the morning but southern Wisconsin into northern Illinois is getting more. I hope you had fun despite the cold.

    Have a great week!

  16. I visited Chicago once, but it was in the summer. I've been to Montana over the winter and they had below zero temps but for some reason it didn't feel as cold as I thought it would. Maybe Chicago is windier? That'll make the cold feel a LOT colder! Have fun and stay warm, Deb!

  17. Cold is good, ha ha! Does Chicago have snow? Moving here, I adapted to winter but it took about 5+ years. I hope you have a nice time visiting. There are variations on what is truly cold. lol.

  18. Anything under 15c/60F is freezing to me so I don’t imagine I’d cope well in Chicago!

Wishing you a happy reading week, stay warm!

  19. Lol!! You get used to it. I was out doing errands yesterday in 30 degree weather without a coat. Welcome to a Midwest winter! I hope though that you are staying warmish for real. Are you still there? Did you get all the snow?
