The Sunday Salon: Home!

Welcome! We are very glad that you joined us here at the
Sunday Salon

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

My return home from East Texas was trying. My car abruptly stopped running on the interstate highway, and I had to be towed to a repair shop. The kind tow truck driver took me to Walmart (the temps had dropped to freezing and I had no coat) and waited for me during my shopping to be sure I was okay. I met three lovely people while I waited for my car to be repaired in Whataburger and all three offered to help me any way they could. The repair shop had my car back on the road in time for me to return home that day. When I got home, I learned that my dad's 96-year-old wife had fallen and was in the hospital with a broken hip. She had surgery and she was standing on her feet the same afternoon. Rosa is going to an in-patient rehab next where my dad will be allowed to stay with her. I brought home allergies or a cold of some sort, so I'm trying to heal up from that, too.

What I Read Last Week:

Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar

Grimm's Fairy Tales

What I'm Reading Now:

The Brothers Karamozov by Fyodor Dostoevsky (Classic)

Listening to Your Life: Daily Meditations by Frederick Buechner (Spirituality)

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:

Good Thing #1:

We had an Art Day,
and drew and painted.
This is Annie's cardinal.

Good Thing #2:

The library had a Lego-a-Thon,
and the kids made things out of Legos.

Good Thing #3:

We visited the zoo,
went to a video game tournament at the library,
took a nature walk,
had a bonfire with S'mores,
read two books together,
played board games,
played soccer and football,
looked at the stars through a telescope borrowed from the library,
saw a new movie called Hoppers,
and hung out together for nine days.

  1. Your car adventure sounds pretty scary: it’s great to encounter such a helpful tow-truck driver. I guess he’s always working with people who are having a bad day! I hope your relative heals quickly — our relative who is a similar age and had a similar accident is having a very long recovery. Have a good week!

  5. I'm glad the time away was on the "good thing" list because the homecoming day sounds terrible! Isn't it lovely when people are helpful and kind? Definitely paying it forward. I hope the car wasn't too expensive -- that had to be a little scary.

  6. It looks like you had a lovely time with the grandkids but I’m sorry you had car issues coming home. What a lovely community to break down in though. I hope your step-mother heals quickly and that she and your Dad can return home soon. Have a great weekend Deb.

  7. Oh, Deb. What a time you've had. I'm glad all worked out with your car troubles. It sounds like the tow truck driver has a heart of gold! What a kind person. I'm glad you had such a good time with your grandkids. Reminds me of our summer visits with our granddaughter.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about your stepmom's fall. I hope she has a quick recovery. It's been a little over a month since my mom fell and broke her hip. Her partial hip replacement went well, but she came home from the rehab facility with a terrible cough that is finally going away. She took another tumble at the optomitrist's office (darned chairs with wheels!) and bruised her tailbone. Poor thing can't catch a break.

  8. A trying trip home indeed, but at least you had all those lovely memories of the time with your grandkids to keep you warm. I love Annie's cardinal. She definitely has potential as an artist. It's good to see you were at least able to get in some reading while healing. Be well and best wishes to your stepmom for a speedy recovery.

  11. What a busy time you have had! The time with the grandkids looked so fun (that Cardinal is amazing). So glad you got home safe and sound with good helpers. Hope your dad's wife continues to heal quickly.

  12. Oh. My. Goodness. One of my top fears...car suddenly dying while driving. Were you scare? Did you panic? Did you call AAA or 411? What a relief to have all those people looking out for you and taking care of you while you waited for your car to be fixed. What was wrong with it? And most importantly, what did you get at Whataburger? Haven't been to one since I moved from Arizona to L.A. in 1996. lol

It's great how they can get people up on their feet the same day as a total hip replacement. I hope she has a smooth and speedy recovery!

Those kids must LOVE when you come to visit! So many fun activities! I saw an ad for that Hoppers movie. Are they hedgehogs or something? I was only half-watching it. Looked cute!

    Hope you feel better soon!!!

    1. Were you scared? Yes! Did you panic? Yes! Did you call AAA or 411? No, I didn't think to do that! What was wrong with it? The belt broke and took out the air conditioner. And most importantly, what did you get at Whataburger? Ha! Breakfast pancakes and coffee!

  13. I'm so glad you had such a wonderful time with your grandkids. Too bad your trip home was not what you would have wanted. I hope you feel better soon, Deb. My kids loved the Sideways School stories when they were younger. I should see if I have any copies for my grands to read.

  31. What an adventure! I am happy it turned out all right. One really appreciates nice, helpful people. I hope your realtive will recuperate as well.
I am curious about Ursula Le Guin as well, although no SF fan. But she seems to be an exceptional writer. The Brothers are also waiting to be read, taking up at big part of my shelves. Enjoy your reading.
