The Sunday Salon: Baby Alligators on Mother's Day...and a New Classics Club Spin!

Welcome! I am glad that you joined us here at the
Sunday Salon

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Intarsia

I'm leaving on Sunday for a week in the mountains of Georgia. My husband is going to a lapidary school to learn intarsia and I shall be hiking and, of course, reading and writing and drawing.

What I Read Last Week:

What an Owl Knows: The New Science of the World's Most Enigmatic Birds
by Jennifer Ackerman (Nonfiction)

The Ride of Her Life: The True Story of a Woman, Her Horse, and Their Last-Chance Journey Across America by Elizabeth Letts (Nonfiction)

What I'm Reading Now:

The Book of Birds: A Field Guide to Wonder and Loss by Robert Macfarlane (Nonfiction)

Make Life Happier by Mark Williamson (Nonfiction)

Enormous Wings by Laurie Frankel (Fiction)

The Classics Club has issued the announcement of the Classics Club’s 43rd CC Spin.

What is the Spin?

It’s easy. At your blog, before next Sunday 17th May, 2026, create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list.

This is your Spin List.

You have to read one of these twenty books by the end of the spin period.

On Sunday, May 17th, The Classics Club will post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by Sunday, July 5th

Let's see who can make it the whole way and finish their spin book!

I have a lot of books to read on my latest Classics Club list. Let's see where the needle stops.

So here is my list.

1. Coronado's Children: Tales of Lost Mines and Buried Treasure by J. Frank Dobie

2. Afoot in England by W. H. Hudson

3. Lost Horizon by James Hilton

4. The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse

5. Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes by Robert Louis Stevenson

6. Bevis: The Story of a Boy by Richard Jefferies

7. The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham

8. Brendon Chase by B. B.

9. In a Summer Season by Elizabeth Taylor

10. In the Mountains by Elizabeth von Arnim

11. Glimpses of the Moon by Edith Wharton

12. The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

13. The Song of the Lark by Willa Cather

14. The Heat of the Day by Elizabeth Bowen

15. Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser

16. Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

17.  Quartet in Autumn by Barbara Pym

18. Stowaway to Mars by John Wyndham

19. A Lost Lady by Willa Cather

20.The Road to Wigan Pier by George Orwell

Have you read any of these?

Do you recommend any of these?

And the spin has stopped on number…

What I Posted Last Week Here at Readerbuzz:

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:

Good Thing #1:

A friend took this picture
at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
on Mother's Day.
Now doesn't this make your own swarm
feel much more manageable?!

Good Thing #2:
A friend made me this
lovely patisserie.
How did she do this?!

Good Thing #3:

Is there anything better than
receiving a book as a gift for Mother's Day?

Weekend linkup spots are listed below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

I hope you will join the linkup for Sunday Salon below.

  1. I have not read any of the classics on your list. So often, classics are not something I enjoy, but I keep trying. I do have some in my TBR list, so I may take a look. So many alligators! Looks like a good Mother’s Day. Enjoy Georgia!

  2. I’ve read five of the hooks on your list, as well as books by several others by the listed authors but not the specific listed ones. It’s a good list.
I hope your week goes well.

  4. Great Spin list. I also have Road to Wigan Pier and Lost Horizons!

  5. This sounds like a fun holiday for both of you! Lapidary school -- I'm impressed! I've only read three of the classics on that list!

  6. Ooh, spotted The Day of the Triffids on your list -- I remember having fun with that one.

Hope you're having a good weekend!

  7. I liked both those Cathers and that's my favorite Hesse, but I'm most curious about the J. Frank Dobie. I read a couple of his when I was living in Texas, but not that one I think.

    Enjoy Georgia! Sounds like fun.

  8. I love the owl 🦉 book and the book on making life happier, dear friend. 😊
I hope you are having a great weekend.

  9. Good luck with your spin! I've read two of these (Far from the Madding Crowd and Lost Horizon, although Lost Horizon was so long ago that I should probably consider a reread). I've read some Willa Cather, but not these, and I do want to read Song of the Lark.

  10. I remember seeing a nest of baby alligators at Brazoria on a trip there years ago. Mother was nearby keeping an eye on them. I've read the Hilton, Hesse, and Maugham books, all long ago. I liked them all but absolutely loved the Hesse book and was obsessed with it for some time. In fact I reread it more than once. I hope you enjoy it.

  11. A friend of mine in Britain just sent me "The Book of Birds: A Field Guide to Wonder and Loss." It arrived in the mail yesterday, and I was out all day, so I haven't really had a chance to look at it yet.

  12. The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse...I read it and be prepared...Hesse’s challenging writing style may not agree with many reader’s tastes—especially for those expecting a more conventional plot-driven story. Chapters 1-8 are basically biography of the main character Joseph Knecht. Feel free to skim these pages….as long as you don’t give up on the book! Once you reach ch 9…the tone changes completely and is much more interesting. It is a true classic and should be read once in your life!

  13. I've read three of your books and enjoyed all of them (3,9,12), but I hope you get the other Wyndham. I've read quite a few of his books, but I'm not familiar with Stowaway to Mars. Good luck!

  14. I bought myself a book for Mother's Day, LOL, but it would have been nice to be gifted one. I had never heard the term intarsia, it sounds fascinating, and I hope your husband enjoys the course. I hope you enjoy your reading, hiking, and all the things. Enjoy Georgia!

  15. Good spin list. Road to Wigan Pier is a memorable one read in college in about 1982. I've had Lost Horizon on just about every spin list but took it off this time. I hope you enjoy your spin book.

  16. Have a great week, both of you!
I have only read #5 and 12. #5 is really cool

  17. Thanks for the link to what intarsia is, Deb. I had no idea. How wonderful that your friend is so talented. Books as a gift anytime is wonderful but books about being a mom on Mother's day is even better. Enjoy your week in Georgia.

  18. Hi Deb, I love how much nature/animals are involved in your current reads.
    Have a great week!

Lapidary school sounds fascinating, I'm glad you get to do your fun stuff while he's there.

Gators are amazing, and yes, seeing this makes me glad for my own small bunch.

  23. As always, my fingers crossed that the spin lands on those dang Triffids!!!

  28. I wish I had given my mother a book to write down her memories and history. I did give my mother in law the book you show in your post last Christmas. She was not thrilled. LOL

    HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

  30. I've read some of those books.
That patisserie, is it baked or cardboard?

  31. I have not heard of most of the books on your classics list, but recognize some of the authors. It is endlessly fascinating to me that so many readers can possibly never overlap with the books they read. And books are always a great gift :)

  32. I've just seen the result - hope you enjoy Far from the Madding Crowd! I always find Hardy very readable.

  33. Enjoy the hiking & reading in the Georgia mountains! Sounds peaceful. It appears that #9 is the Classic Spin .... so I think you'll be reading some Hardy .... which is not always cheerful but still insightful. Enjoy.
