Yesteryear: A Novel
by Caro Claire Burke
Genre: Fiction
Published: April 9, 2026
Page Count: 400 pages
Summary:
Natalie lives a traditional lifestyle – and her followers are sick with envy. Her charming farmhouse on her working ranch is artfully cluttered, her husband is a handsome cowboy, her homemade sourdough boules are each more beautiful than the last. So what if there are nannies and producers and industrial-grade ovens behind the scenes? What her followers don’t know won’t hurt them.
Then, one morning, Natalie wakes up in a strange, horrible version of reality. Her home, her husband, her children―they’re all familiar, but something’s off. Is this a hoax? A reality show? A test from God? Natalie knows just two things for sure: this isn't her perfect life, and she must escape, by any means possible.
This is the last day of the life I imagined for myself.

In the daylight, it's easier to see how ramshackle this house truly is. The floorboards are old and rotted. Through the ceiling eaves in the kitchen, I can see slivers of sky...In this kitchen, there's no hidden pantry containing a massive refrigerator, two dishwashers, and a microwave...

What do you think about rising prices for hardcovers, paperbacks, and eBooks?
It's important that people are able to read and think about what is going on in the world. Books should always be affordable.

Your question about book prices surprised me because in a way I thought it was my imagination that the prices were getting higher. And now I don’t really think so. Remember when Kindle books were $9.99? Supposedly you can still get some books for that price or even lower — but it’s far from standard.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Reading opens our minds to new ideas and perspectives, and books should be accessible to everyone regardless of budget. It’s becoming harder as prices rise, which is one reason libraries are so important.
ReplyDeleteHappy Reading! Stop over and share your thoughts if you get a chance. 📚😊
I've seen Yesteryear around a lot recently. It sounds like an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteI agree. They are gradually pricing people out. We need to make sure that libraries stay open!
Have a great weekend!

Yesteryear sounds like a dystopian nightmare. I will be very curious what you end up thinking of it. Everyone seems to want to create content for TikTok these days but behind the content what are the lives like?
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by the beginning of "Yesteryear" and am adding it to my read list. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I read exclusively on Kindle now and, to be honest, I haven't really paid attention to the price. Whatever it is, it is worth it to me. I strongly support public libraries (where both of my daughters began their working lives) for those who don't have that option.
ReplyDeleteI bought two books the other day at an independent bookstore in Port Townsend, WA. The hardcover was $29 and the paperback was $19. The prices have crept up over the years, but I usually buy books to give to my mom (for her birthday, Mother's Day, and Christmas) and then she passes them on to me.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure if I wanted to read Yesteryear, but reading your passages has me curious now!
It freaks me out when I read some of the old Agatha Christies I bought probably 50 years ago and the cover prices are 50 cents, maybe 75 (big spender!). Now paperbacks are in the $16 zone. It's frustrating when they are books you want to keep.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to see you reading Yesteryear! It's on my TBR and I'm intrigued to see how it unfolds.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a fascinating story.
ReplyDeleteTBH. when we downsized I got rid of most of our books and bookcases (a lot) and just kept our travel books, some cookbooks, although I have bought many more since! I buy those at a local bookstore.
ReplyDeleteI only use the library for reading on my phone. It is so convenient and I always have books with me. I have a huge TBR library list so I'm patient waiting for a book to be available.
There are several e-readers lying around here that we should get rid of.
I do feel guilty for not supporting our local bookstores/libraries and I love browsing in them. I will still buy books for presents. The last book I bought was at Word on The Street festival last fall, and got it signed by the author.
Yesteryear sounds fascinating!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great snippet! Yesteryear sounds like a fantastic read! Hope you have a wonderful day! :D
