The Sunday Salon: Chicken Sitting

Welcome! We are so glad that you joined us here at the
Sunday Salon

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

I am spending the week up in East Texas with my daughter-in-law's aunt, Susie, taking care of chickens while my son and his family take a vacation to Nashville. To give me strength and courage while trying to care for 200 chickens (last time we did this, Susie fell and I got pecked by a mean rooster), I'm wearing my Texas chicken earrings my daughter-in-law and son gave me.

Please forgive me for not visiting your blog this week. I promise to catch up when I get back home next week!

What I Read Last Week:

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson (Nonfiction)

The Little Town on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder (Children's Fiction)

What I'm Reading Now:

The Book of Birds: A Field Guide to Wonder and Loss by Robert Macfarlane (Nonfiction)

Make Life Happier by Mark Williamson (Nonfiction)

The Solitary Summer by Elizabeth von Arnim (Fiction)

The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (Fiction)

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:

Good Thing #1, 2, and 3:

I plan to follow the Joyful June calendar every day this month.

Day 1 is "Decide to look for what is good every day this month." Yes!

  1. Wow! We had a few chickens when I was a teenager, and they were fun and easy, but 200 chickens! I hope you’re the chicken earrings - which are adorable, btw - bring all the good vibes to you and Susie for your chicken sitting duties.

Cool calendar! When I went through some particularly hard times I trained my brain to work in the way it describes. It does help.

  2. Taking care of Texas chickens sounds like babysitting Ted Cruz - and others I could name!

  3. Some people say that chickens are very intelligent. I hope you’ll be able to comment on this when you have complete your chicken-sitting duties.

  5. Good luck with the chickens! I got a bit traumatized by some of my grandmother's when I was a kid. Kind of made me never want to be around them - ha! Like your June calendar suggestions.

  10. I don't know about chicken sitting, one attacked my son when he was young. I would rather animal sit for a cat, dog, fish, sloth, bunny or a deskunked skunk. My son Anothy's friend Lisa has had a few skinks but she had them de-skunked. To my surprise hey make really good pets.

  16. I hope the chicken earrings helped with that Herculean task! I remember watching Little House on the Prairie. I loved it (along with The Waltons!). Thanks for the link-up.

  17. You are braver than I am. My friend had a chicken, she tried to hand it to me... it was the most terrifying moment of my life. I'm not about those mini velociraptors.

  22. Good luck with the chickens! You're providing an excellent service to allow family some vacation time -- it's so hard when there are living creatures left behind.

  23. Chickens are some of my favorite animals. I was designated as the chicken caretaker on the farm when I was growing up and so I had plenty of chances to observe them up close and personal. Each bird had its unique personality that contributed to making a very interesting community. Observing them gave me a good foundation for my later study of sociology. Chickens and humans have a surprising (or maybe not!) amount of traits in common.
