♫ ♪ ♫ Chicago!  Chicago!  It's My Kind of Town! ♫ ♪ ♫

Pardon me for interrupting my lovely Paris in July,
but I must head off for a few days for a little
Chicago in July.

My Younger Son chose Love over Madre y Padre
(they always do, don't they?)
and set out for Chicago in May.
It's taken me two months but I've finally talked my husband into
venturing into the Big City and ensuring YS is
eating his veggies and otherwise Being Good.

So here's the question you are waiting for:
What books are you taking along, Deb Nance?

This was tricky, choosing books to match my destination,
as I've already read (and loved)
Devil in the White City
and
A Long Way from Chicago
and
and Studs Terkel's Working
and even
The Coast of Chicago by Stuart Dybek.

This is all I managed to come up with:

Insurgent (Divergent, #2)
Title:  Insurgent by Veronica Roth
Rationale:  Set in a futuristic Chicago

City Walks: Chicago: 50 Adventures On Foot
Title:  Chicago Walks
Rationale: Self-evident

And that's it.
Any other suggestions to offer?

  2. Welcome to the Windy City! Hope you love it here. :) If you're looking for MG/YA, you can also try any of Blue Balliett's books. They're set in Hyde Park, near University of Chicago, and the kids have to solve mysteries related to the Art Institute, Frank Lloyd Wright, etc. Mystery: any of the V.I. Warshawsky novels by Sara Paretsky. Classics: Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser or Native Son by Richard Wright. Other works: The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros; Never a City So Real by Alex Kotlowitz; The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger; and almost anything by Saul Bellow or Nelson Algren. And I'd be remiss if I didn't throw in a few romances - anything by Julie James and the Chicago Stars series by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. :)

If you want to know the character of the city, though, I never get tired of reading Mike Royko's columns collected in One More Time. Short and easy to read, but lots of info about the people and neighborhoods of real Chicagoans. Have a great time!!

  4. Hey, that's my town too! Younger Son has good taste in cities. May I suggest you sample the pizza and Chicago style hot dogs? And if it's been raining at all where you are, can you bring that with you too? We could use it.

    1. So far this year we have had over 30" of rain! Last year we were in a drought and actually were semi-receptive to a good tropical storm stopping by!
