What I Read Last Week One yes and one maybe from my reads last week. If you and your family find yourselves constantly eating out of a box, Dinner: The Playbook is for you. It is masterful and covers every possible question you might have about learning to eat supper together as a family. I will go so far as to say it could be life changing. Strong words, I know, but I think making dinner together, trying new and healthy foods, and eating together in the ways this book shares could completely reshape your family.
I liked We Are Not Ourselves. It's a solid story of an Irish woman in NYC who wants more for her life than her drunken parents gave her. In spite of her dreams, she marries a man who is not ambitious and (BIG SPOILER ALERT) unfortunately develops Altzheimer's. Solid, yes, but also long. It could have (and should have, I think) been edited down to a nice three hundred page novel. But on and on it went. I was very, very tired of the storyline by the end.

What are you reading today?!
What is the Sunday Salon? Imagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.
The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.
Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.
Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.
It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between! This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! As part of this weekly meme Book Journey loves to encourage you all to go and visit the others participating in this meme.
As always you have a nice mixture of genres here. I think the one that might interest me is the creative nonfiction collection, although I don't usually nonfiction. Hmmmm. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read it.
DeleteI like your books. Glad I stopped by.
ReplyDeleteThe dinner book is very helpful.
DeleteEnjoy your new books...and I enjoyed We Are Not Ourselves, too. Thanks for sharing...and here's MY WEEKLY SUNDAY/MONDAY UPDATES POST
ReplyDeleteI wanted to love WANO.
DeleteAlways love your children's books!
ReplyDeleteThis one is by an author whose previous work I've loved.
DeleteI always love your honest book reviews!
ReplyDeleteTrue Stories Well Told is calling my name.... :)
If I can't be a fabulous reviewer, at least I can be a very honest reviewer.
DeleteThank you for visiting me today. It feels so good to get back to my regular routine and be out visiting today.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back.
DeleteSince we're practically book twins, I know if you didn't enjoy We Are Not Ourselves, I won't either. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteSo true!
DeleteSounds like great books. I cannot agree strongly enough about how important eating together is. We still eat together as much as possible even though the older ones are teenagers and their friends are constantly amazed by it. It's somehow got us labeled as the house to hangout at. That in itself can be a bit challenging when I'm trying to figure out how to fit the extra teenagers at the table but I wouldn't trade it for anything! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI agree completely.
DeleteEnjoy your books and have a great week ;)
ReplyDeleteI hope I will.
DeleteYep, that's me...a voracious reader!
ReplyDeleteDinner The Playbook looks great. We eat together as a family but it's always nice to try new things and keep things fresh, I'll bet there are some good insights here. And your new arrivals look fun too- look like happy reading!
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame We Are Not Ourselves was overly long, as it sounds like it might be a good read otherwise.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your books :)
Agree.
DeleteWoodward and McTwee looks adorable, I'm always on the look out for children's books to read my granddaughter. My boys have grown up and left home now but we've always eaten dinner as a family. I love the sound of Dinner the Playbook. Have a great week and happy reading :)
ReplyDeleteThe secret to keeping your family close might be eating dinner together, I think.
DeleteOhh, I saw last week that you were reading We are not ourselves, and was curious to see what you thought, it sounded like it'd be a good read. Not sure if I want to or not, books that tend to go on and on and on isn't a good sign for my liking lol. I do want to read the Dinner book! boxes happen frequently here, not enough time in the day for good meals.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog!
Cooking and eating dinner together is vital - I agree! I loved We Are Not Ourselves... definitely a little too long, but an amazing debut.
ReplyDeleteDinner the playbook just reminded me I need to go throw the roast in the crockpot! Here is my Monday Ugh, I am glad I stopped here, or we would be eating Pizza Rolls... LOL
ReplyDeleteI do think We Are Not Ourselves meandered far too much . . . and I feel like I keep seeing this in novels lately. It seems like one of my most common comments on books is "this could have been cut by 100-200 pages."
ReplyDeleteMe, too! C'mon, editors, do your job!
DeleteThe Dinner Playbook sounds so fun! I've been cooking recipes from a cookbook so it's great to come across this.
ReplyDeleteThe Dinner Playbook sounds like fun. We have made it a point to eat together most nights, but it is so easy to get in a rut with the same foods and same habits.
ReplyDeleteWe don't eat together as often as we should do - too many conflicting schedules but I know we should make more of an effort
ReplyDeleteHappy reading!

I think it's okay to miss some meals together. We lead busy lives these days. But the goal is always to be together as much as possible. I say from experience that children grow up fast.
DeleteWe Are Not Ourselves sounds quite long. Congrats on making it through. I'm not sure I will attempt it. Where are the editors these days?
