Day 3

There is no question in my mind who my favorite book character is.

Let me give you some clues and see if you can guess his identity....

(1) He's a person who always does the right thing, even when it is the difficult thing.

(2) He's a dad, with two children, raising them alone.

(3) Here's a quote about him, from one of his children:
"He did not do the things our schoolmates' fathers did....He sat in the living room and read."

Have you figured out who he is yet? How about another clue:

(4) Here's a quote from him: "I wanted you to see what real courage is...It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what."

Got it? No? Here's a big clue, a conversation between my favorite book character and his daughter, one that includes his name:

"...if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again."

"Atticus, are we going to win it?"

"No, honey."

You know who he is now. Yes, it's Atticus Finch, from To Kill a Mockingbird.

Who's your favorite book character? Why do you love this character?

Post a picture of your favorite character quote.

Day 2

I do all social media:

I'm at Twitter.

I'm at Goodreads.

I'm at Facebook.

I'm at Instagram.

But here's the truth:  Social Media feels like overload a lot of the time. I love people. But I also like my quiet times.

Are you like me? Or do you love to be going all the time?

Organize a bunch of books into a beautiful spine poem.

Spine Poetry Instagram Challenge,

(using only blue-cover books obtained from recent library conference):

My Diary from the Edge of the World

from the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess

Summer by summer,

those girls, last in a long line of rebels,
kissing in America the boy who knew everything,
betting on hope.
Listen to the moon.
Gone crazy in Alabama.
Survival strategies of the almost brave into the dangerous world.

Day 1

It's yet another year that I miss BEA. (very sad face)

(1) Our school is open until June 4. BEA is always at the end of May.
(2) NYC is a long way from Alvin, Texas.
(3) NYC is expensive for this small-town girl.

So I once again settle myself down into my oh-so comfy chair and settle in with the next-best-thing, Armchair BEA.

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I'm Deb Nance at Readerbuzz.

I've been a book blogger for seven years.

I work as a primary school librarian.

I started reading spontaneously when I was two, and it's my favorite thing to do.

What is your theme song?

Here's one I like:

"It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood...a beautiful day for a neighbor....Let's make the most of this beautiful day...since we're together we might as well say...would you be mine...could you be mine...won't you be my neighbor?"

What is one book everyone should read?

I wish I could tell you the one book everyone should read.

I don't know what it is, but I know there's a book out there for everyone.

What is your favorite genre and why?

I'm deeply interested in happiness and spirituality and education and creativity.

Not sure what genres those are.

Take a picture of your bookshelf and share it with us! :) #ABEAShelfie #Shelfie

  1. Sorry that you can't make it to BEA but looking forward to your Armchair BEA posts and interactions (this is my first year!) x

    1. I'm determined to try to make it next year. I'm saving my pennies.

  2. Living in the UK, BEA simply isn't a realistic thing to want but discovering ABEA last year totally made up for it! Hopefully happiness and creativity can be found in most genres! Also, shelf is looking amazing, as are you! I'm loving all the ABEA fun :D Thanks for sharing!
    My Intro and Library post
    Juli @ Universe in Words

    1. BEA would be (almost) impossible if I lived outside the US. Glad you can join in here!

  3. Primary School Librarian--BEST JOB EVER! I used to be one, and then we moved and then I was one again, and... oh well... Best Job ever! Happy ABEA week!

  4. it is in Chicago in 2016, so cheaper, and hopefully we can meet face to face!

    1. Woo hoo! Thanks for letting me know. My son and d-i-l live in Chicago. I can do BEA in Chicago!

  5. I love the fact that you included Mr. Rogers! Had to have a listen again. Have you washed away yet? We almost have and it seems there is no end to it. However, other than those that have been flooded, the rain has been so needed. Have a good rest of the school year. Enjoy your ABEA. I totally agree with the whole 'there's a book for every person' and it's not the same book. :-)

    1. Mr. Rogers makes me feel so peaceful!

No, we've had rain, but it has come in nicely spaced intervals. Thank goodness. We were (literally) washed away in 1979, and I don't ever want a repeat of that.

  6. Lovely bookshelfie! It looks really cozy. ^^ I understand the disability to go to BEA though, since I live in Florida. Hope you have a great time at BEA!

    1. Thank you. It's an old, old bookshelf. With a fold-down desk. Perfect for my small house.

  7. I'm on the fence about whether BEA would be good for me or not -- seems super exciting but enormously overwhelming. And thank you for being a primary school librarian -- you and your ilk made me the reader I am! :)

    1. I can take overwhelming if it comes with loads of free books. And great authors.

  8. Our school schedule has changed, so I could make it, but this year there weren't many speakers I wanted to hear. And going to New York City... yuck! Still, some year I hope to make it .

  9. I'm in the same boat with BEA ~ this North GA mountain girl will enjoy hanging out with my blogging friends in the comfort of my own home. Love your #shelfie! and the quilt hanging!

    1. Yes, I should be happy to be enjoying all the pluses of BEA without any of the negatives.

      (Proudly) I made the quilt.

  10. Hi Deb. It is nice to get to know you better. I adore your theme song! I love Mister Rogers. I take it you are a friendly girl.
Happy ABEA week. I look forward to your posts this week.

    1. I'm pretty friendly. We all here in Texas are pretty friendly.

  11. I love your answer to the book recommendation question! It's so true! Have a fun ABEA :)

  12. Oh and I see you are a fellow fit reader too :)

  13. Thanks for the Mr. Rogers clip - I am sure I'll be singing that song the rest of today! Love him.

  14. Librarian was my dream job. Because of free access to all the books, obviously. :)
    Nice to meet you!

  15. Great theme song! I could never keep a bookshelf looking that neat.

  16. I sing Mr. Roger's neighborhood song every time we have decent weather. I live in Ontario, Canada, so it's iffy at times. :-)
    Great shelfie! Happy ABEA!

    1. I bet it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood in Ontario right now.

  17. Happy ABEA, Deb! Love the photo of you and your shelves!

  18. Hello Deb! It's nice to meet you! I agree that there's a book for everyone out there, so I can't for the life of me, settle on one book.

    Thanks for stopping by!

    1. It's impossible for me to settle on just one either.

  19. Maybe next year! I should plan in advance for when it is. I never do!

  20. Loved the Mr. Roger's reminder. My grandson watches Daniel Tiger, it's just not the same.

  21. Great spine poetry! I'm another one in the UK so BEA is just a dream for me!

    1. I think it would be worth the expense to visit BEA, though.

  22. Love the spine poetry! I look at the picture of you and think instantly "teacher." Am I right? Social media does feel like a lot sometimes, because more than anything I like to talk to people on their blogs and on mine, but it does have its high points for getting to know bloggers a little better. Happy BEA!

  23. I love quiet times too and I have to limit my social media time as otherwise I spend too much time there and then I miss out on my reading and wind down time.

  24. I definitely agree with you that social media takes up a lot of time. It can be a major time suck, but also a fun waste of time heh.

  25. Oh Atticus Atticus, I KNEW I'd missed someone big off my list! Best role model for anyone ever,I love him :-)

  26. Atticus seems like the perfect father and knows the right thing to say at all times. This character has so much to admire and although fiction, he can be a role model for us all. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  27. I got it!! I love Atticus! Great Character pick.

  28. I said yesterday that I suck at social media--- but part of it is that I do like my quiet time too.
