The Sunday Salon: The Library Hotel, The Lion King, the New York Public Library, and The Strand Bookstore

Welcome! I am delighted that you joined us here at the
Sunday Salon

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Last week was a dream of delights in NYC. We stayed at the Library Hotel, went to the New York Public Library, saw The Lion King on Broadway, and visited the Strand Bookstore. I feel like I should do a post on each of these, especially the Library Hotel, which I heartily recommend.

What did I love most? All those wonderful conversations we had with our fellow guests at the hotel, taxi drivers, people at the theater, customers at the bookstores, people on the plane.

What I Read Last Week:

What I'm Reading Now:

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry (Reread)

When Cathy of 746 books announced last year that she would not host 20 Books of Summer this year after ten successful years, Emma of Words and Peace and Annabel of AnnaBookBel both volunteered to take it on. Summer reading IS the 20, 15 or 10 Books challenge to all of us! They couldn’t let Cathy’s wonderful challenge fall by the wayside.

So this is the first call to start planning…

  • The #20BooksofSummer2025 challenge runs from Sunday June 1st to Sunday August 31st
  • The first rule of 20 Books is that there are no real rules, other than signing up for 10, 15, or 20 books and trying to read from your TBR.
  • Pick your list in advance, or nominate a bookcase to read from, or pick at whim from your TBR.
  • If you do pick a list, you can change it at any time – swap books in/out.
  • Don’t get panicked at not reaching your target.
  • Just enjoy a summer of great reading and make a bit of space on your shelves!

They’ll have monthly summary posts where you can add progress reports and recommendations. The final one at the at the beginning of September will stay open for a while to catch all the last reviews.

Emma designed some new logos, and for the first time they’ve done one specially for our Antipodean friends for whom it is winter rather than summer. Resize them to fit your needs. Emma has also made a book bingo card to match your reads for more fun, too.

If you’re planning to join in please do add your blog / planning post link to the Mr Linky here, which’ll help us keep track, and you can use the hashtag #20BooksofSummer2025 on your socials.

Here are my (planned, but subject to change) 20 Books of Summer:

James by Percival Everett.     The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.
Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser.    Being Mortal by Atul Gawande.
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang.    Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty.
Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945 by Tony Judt.    Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat.
Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor.    Dream Count by Chimamanda Ngosi Adichie.
Raising Hare: A Memoir by Chloe Dalton.    Aflame: Learning from Silence by Pico Iyer.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.     The Light Eaters by Zoë Schlanger.
A Bakery in Paris by Aimee K. Runyan.     How to Live by Judith Valente.
Bake Happy by Judith Fertig.   Sanditon by Jane Austen.
Dangerous Liaisons by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.     Pigeon Post by Arthur Ransome.

  4. I'm looking forward to your post about the Library Hotel. Amazing trip. Will check out the challenge Cathy is hosting but this summer won't be good for me to commit. Maybe the books of winter.

  7. What an interesting list of books for your summer reading. I don't really plan my reading in advance. I just read whatever strikes my fancy at the moment, so we shall see what my summer brings!

    1. I like to have a big list of books to draw from when I get stuck about what to read next. I don't stick strictly to a list though.

  8. Wow your NYC trip sounds wonderful! My parents used to stay at the Library Hotel and they told me about it. I'm glad the whole visit to NYC was nice & bookish! So many good bookstores there and people too. And your 20 Books of Summer are like Wowsa. Lots of chunksters on your list, which would take me a year, lol. I will consider putting Dream Count on my summer list. .... I think I will put out my list next weekend. Cheers.

  10. I'm on wait for the library for the Spying on the South. I liked Confederates in the Attic a lot. I'm jealous re the lion King. It's such a joy when the animals arrive. I remember being so delighted. I couldn't stop girning, looking around and trying to take it all in.

    1. I really wished I dared record it all, so that I could watch it again and again at my leisure.

  11. Sounds like you had a great time in NYC! I love the Strand and going to Broadway shows. We were going to go when we were there a few months ago but decided to go to Canada instead since we'd never been there before.
I LOVED it! I'm going to do 20 Books Of Summer again this year. I recently got hooked on court tv shows and let my books sit there. I'm going to take time for both starting tomorrow.

  14. I'm very tempted to try the 20 Books of Summer challenge! Sounds like a great way to get me reading stuff that's been on my list for months (in some cases years) 😂 looking forward to hearing your thoughts on The Poppy War, it's an amazing book.

    1. I should have noted that a person can aim to read 10, 15, or 20 books this summer.

  15. That sounds like an amazing trip! Definitely the stuff of dreams!

I did 20 Books Of Summer for the first time last year and enjoyed it. I only managed 8/10 in the timeframe, but finished off the last 2 later in the year. I am excited to do it again this year!

    Have a lovely weekend!

  16. What a wonderful trip to NYC! I miss going into the City on a whim. Since moving to South Carolina, "rural SC", I haven't been back and it's been 7 years. One of my trips into the City was to see The Lion King, which I thought was phenomenal! And The Strand is always a good time. I have not been to The Library Hotel. So, now that I would need a hotel, I am writing it down! And it's funny you mention BookExpo because I was just thinking about that annual trip to go to that and how I really do miss that whole experience.

Thanks also for sharing the reading challenge for the summer. I need something to get me to start regularly reading and posting my reading and this sounds like it fits the bill!

    Have a great week!

  17. This sounds like a wonderful time and I love the frontage of the hotel. And yes, we want more detail on all of those. (Lion King might be my all-time favorite musical as far as spectacle and staging is concerned. I hope you loved it as much as I did!)

  18. I LOVE the sound of The Library Hotel - it looks fabulous:)). What a lovely bookish holiday. The 20 Books of Summer sounds very tempting but I'm only just emerging from a huge reading slump and am a tad nervous about putting any more pressure on myself just now. Maybe next year. I love your very varied reading list for this year's challenge:). Have a lovely week, Deb and many thanks for your wonderful pics of New York.

  19. Oh, James and Dream Count are both excellent and the rest of your list looks good too.

I haven't ever toured the NY Public Library, I must do that next time I am in NYC.

  21. The Library Hotel looks amazing! I'd love to hear more about it in a post. I'd also love to visit the NY Public Library! So historic and neat from what I've seen. It's been featured a lot in movies. I need to visit New York again. I only spent a short amount of time there before a cruise.

  22. It's been a long, long time since I went to NYC, and I'd love to go again. I might not leave the reading room of this hotel if I were to stay there.

    Enjoy your 20 books!

  23. I've always wanted to go to The Strand. Definitely do a post on that one :) I think I will sign up for the 20 Summer reads but I don't see myself reading 20 books in three months. I am a slow reader at times.

    You have a great list!

  31. I love that there is a winter logo for the 20 books of summer challenge this time around! I have never joined in before because...you know...not summer, but I might see what I can do this time. And I could tie it into Paris in July as well I am sure!
