Cowgirl Peg

We love author visits at our school. Is there an author we love to have visit us more than Cowgirl Peg? Peggy Sundberg writes stories about dogs and horses, and children at our school are crazy about both.

Sundberg has visited us two times in the past ten years and we are currently planning to have her return in the spring.

Sundberg grew up in our town, and rode horses down the road where our school now lies. She ran a horse farm for many years in Wyoming, but she has returned to the Texas Gulf Coast to live.

Sundberg currently has written six children’s picture books, including Lonesome the Little Horse, Isabelle Lives a Dream, Shortstuff Bucks, Jasmine’s Incredible Story, Oakey-Dokey Oakie, and Cowgirl Peg and the Big Race.

She is scheduled to have her latest book published in three weeks.

Cowgirl Peg is a big hit at our school here in Texas.

Books Children Should Know: Great Readalouds

I can't wait to share these with my granddaughter...with my great-nieces and great-nephews...with all children, really.

Here's the list and the why:

Green Eggs and Ham...You can probably learn to read if you just have this book.
A Kiss for Little Bear...Share a kiss and see what happens.
Make a World...Let's learn to draw while we are at it.
Life-Size Zoo Animals...A little nonfiction is great, too.
Because of Winn-Dixie...Everybody loves a dog story.
Half Magic...A coin that will accomplish every wish...but only halfway. I love magic, and half-magic.
Where the Sidewalk Ends...The real wishes and hopes of people.
Harry Potter...Everything we want in a story—adventure, humor, danger, delight.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland...Mysterious and surprising.
The Little Prince...An outsider’s perspective on life.
A Wrinkle in Time...the universe is in danger...can a nerdy girl and her family save it?

What would be on your list?

My Week in Books: The Texas Book Festival, Inprint Reading Series, and Cybils, Cybils, Cybils

I spent last weekend in book heaven, also known as The Texas Book Festival. I'm working on a post all about the wonderful time I had there, so prepare to be filled with envy soon.

I returned from the book festival late Sunday night and Monday night I headed to Rice University to see two brilliant authors, Jennifer Egan and Claire Messud, read from their latest books and discuss writing and their books and other equally enchanting topics.

And I gathered up more and more Cybils as my mailbox started filling with nominees. I'm reading fast and furiously and I'm happy to report I've hit 185 books read and reviewed. That only leaves me with another 165 to go. Whew.

I've got stacks of Cybils books all over the place...

...on the kitchen table...

...on the floor...

...in the trunk of my car...

Cybils...Cybils...Cybils...I think I can...I think I can....

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

Book Characters as President

It helps, sometimes, to imagine a worse case scenario.

We could have chosen a book character as our leader.

What if, say, the Cat in the Hat had been elected last November?

Winnie-the-Pooh has trouble with decisiveness, I think.

Scarlett O'Hara could definitely seize the reins of power, but what then?

What would the country be like if The Little Price was head of state?

We could have chosen Napoleon from Animal Farm. Or the Wizard of Oz.

Peter Pan, maybe? Curious George? Or Pinocchio?

Oh dear.

On the other hand, I can imagine some wonderful book character leaders. Anne Shirley. Charlotte from the famous web. Mary Poppins. Gus McCrea from Lonesome Dove. The Little Engine That Could. Tom Sawyer has a lot of gumption. Atticus Finch. Even the little boy from The Emperor's New Clothes knew how to call a spade a spade. And I definitely like Madeline, though she would have to immigrate. And there's always Gandalf.
