Top Ten Characters I Wish I Could BFF's With!

10. Toby Lolness in Toby Alone
Toby is a tiny, tiny fellow (think: point of a pencil) living in a tree that is threatened with destruction.
Who wouldn't want to be tiny? And off with a friend to save a tree?

9. Clarice Bean in Utterly Me, Clarice Bean
Is Clarice Bean the type of girl who waits around when her best friend heads off to Russia? No! She befriends bad boy Karl and discovers Karl can have excellent ideas as a collaborator on a school project.
Clarice Bean can get along with anyone.

8. Tashi in Tashi
Jack tells his parents about his new friend, Tashi, who arrives on a swan and lives in a land of dragons and monsters and giants. Being friends with Tashi would mean some fantastic adventures.

7. Haroun from Haroun and the Sea of Stories
Haroun puts his father's life in danger and must go off on a series of adventures to make things right.

6. Stargirl from Stargirl or
Maniac Magee from Maniac Magee
Same basic wonderful type of person. Just decide if you want a zany friend who is a girl or a boy.

5. The BFG from The BFG
He can carry you around wherever you want to go.
And, despite appearances, he is nice.

4. The four brothers and sisters from Half Magic
I've always wanted to be magical.
And these kids found a magic coin.
Well, a half-magic coin.
Wouldn't that be fantastic?

3. Laura Ingalls of Little House on the Prairie
Just think. Prairie fires.
Dangerous Native Americans.
Travel.

2. Lily of Lily's Purple Plastic Purse
Lily says what she thinks.
She's brave.
And she knows how to dress.

1. Clown in Clown by Quentin Blake
He's a toy and he saves himself from a garbage can.
Great friend material.

  1. Excellent list Debbie. How I wish I had read all of these too. Yes I will some day, but not soon enough for my liking. I'm quite desperate to read Toby Alone and Clarice Bean especially. I haven't even read Clown, and I just love Quentin Blake. I'll try and remedy this soon, since you've put him at the top of your list. I must agree with you though about the BFG. He is totally cool. I'd love to check out his dream jar collection. You couldn't hang out too long though, otherwise he might offer to share his meal.

  2. Nice list! I agree with Haroun and Laura Ingalls. And I used to daydream about having the BFG for my BFF when I was a kid. I was so jealous of Sophie!

  6. It's sad, but the only character I recognize on your list is Laura Ingalls and I haven't read that book. I'll have to check some of these out so I can see what those characters are like.

  10. I love the BFG! I said in my list that I could have quite happily listed all of Roald Dahl's characters for my list, they're so wonderfully written!

  11. Oh some really good ones on here! The BFG is amazing and would be totally helpful to have around. Half Magic is a fantastic read that so rarely gets any attention anymore - great that you included it! And I always liked Laura from the Little House series (her sister Mary, on the other hand...)

  12. Stargirl is a great choice! I also chose Laura Ingalls. Some of these titles are new to me-I'll have to check them out. I'm always looking for new books for my classroom library.

  13. Clarise Bean!! :D

Also, you are a Rushdie fan? I LOVED Midnight's Children. I actually had to read it for my MA final written exam, but it's just fantastic. I hope you're enjoying it!

  14. Fun and imaginative list. I too had Stargirl on mine. I hadn't ever thought that she and Maniac Magee were one in the same. Hum. I'll have to think on that for a while.
