More B̶a̶t̶h̶s̶ Reading, Less T̶a̶l̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ Acquiring

Maira Kalman:  "I have always loved buying books, and I often say to myself, 'I won't buy any books this week.' Then, the next thing I know, I'm running over to twelve bookstores and frantically buying books as if I'm deprived."

I've been reading this book this week:

Are you a reader of Nick Hornby's monthly column in the Believer? Have you read More Baths or any of the other books-from-columns Nick Hornby has assembled? If so, you will be familiar with the format I'm using for this week's It's Monday! post (below).

BOOKS ACQUIRED:

From the library

More from the library
(Note: Three copies of the same book,
one in English, one in Spanish,
and one audiobook version...
How crazy is that?!)

From publishers

Twelve books (!) acquired from
my school's book fair

Three new e-books on my iPad

Two of these books on my nightstand
are books I ordered from Amazon.

Eek!

BOOKS READ:

Okay, it's pretty clear that I'm having trouble with my Books Acquired/Books Read ratios.
Any suggestions, folks?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! As part of this weekly meme Book Journey loves to encourage you all to go and visit the others participating in this meme. Book Journey offers a weekly contest for those who visit 10 or more of the Monday Meme participants and leave a comment telling BJ how many you visited.

  1. Not one. My Kindle is overflowing and I get antsy because there is all sorts of new books I want to be reading now too. The books on my Kindle are last month's books, you know?

  2. It's a problem facing all of us each and every week, isn't it? Certainly I have the same trouble at the library, my eyes are too big for my reading stomach. I've got used to taking back books unread, it is always disappointing to be sure though. I think you just need to plug on. Some weeks you finish heaps of books, clearly this one was just a bit of a trough. And not every week is such a week of acquisitions- thankfully there aren't book fairs to tempt us every week! Three versions of the same book is fabulous, I've done two before, but not managed the three. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Sweet Poison. And I do like Nick Hornby, and have read a lot of his stuff, I hadn't heard of this one.

  3. I, too, often find myself with many more acquired than read, I have been trying to slow the ratio a bit and get to some shelf sitters than have been waiting to be read for months (dare I say even years). Good luck!

  4. It's like a failed balancing act that has us falling on our faces....

Reading from My TBR Pile is always one of the challenges I sign up for each year.

I make a little progress...and acquire some more books...what's a girl to do?

    Love your post.

    Here's MY MONDAY MEMES POST

  5. Sometimes it's hard to choose what to read because there are SO MANY CHOICES! I suggest spinning in a circle with your eyes closed and then just pointing ;) Read whatever your finger points to ;0)

  6. Yes, nice strategy. At least it's an attempt to conquer, right?

  7. I have had issues with this. Sheer lack of funds cut me back - until I rediscovered my love of the library. Now I'm in the dame boat again, save for pesky due dates. Lately the main way I get any actual reading is through audiobooks.

Good luck. Hope you find a solution.

  8. What an amazing amount of books! Enjoy yourself, although I usually find that such an amount of books makes it a bit harder to pick the next one to read!

    kind regards,

  9. I can relate! And then there's the stack of books I've read, waiting to be reviewed....

  10. I have absolutely no suggestions. I just discovered a new library in a different system which means I now have a new library card and the ability to check out 50 books at one time. :-)

I'm so glad that you have Far From the Tree! Giants Beware is a really nice read. My daughter and I enjoyed it. I'm definitely going to check out Walls Within Walls. Happy reading.

  11. Love Nick Norby, and thought that book was interesting.

I've made my self stop buying books until my school year is done (June 6). I figure I can knock about 15ish books off my TBR list of 60ish before then.

    Basically, it's a disease.

  12. I am guilty of that as well. A LOT of times I end up with huge of stacks of books from the library that I have to take back because I havent had the chance to read them. And I feel so guilty taking them back because I want to read them all. But the Monday reading lists are def helping with that. Also, I want to read The House on Mango Street, its one of those books I never got around to but are on my list!

  13. great format - made me smile :) i read one of Hornby's books on reading a while ago. there should be a book-sized bag of time coming with each book.

  14. and now i just saw your bilingual read. i think it's a great way to read books from other languages, to have both versions and be able to listen to the narrative.

  15. I had the exact same problem - I could easily have bought 20+ books a week if I gave in every time the book-buying urge raised its attractive head.
My solution was to start saving up for something important - in my case a RTW trip. It's amazing how easy it is to deny myself another book when I consider that I could spend that amount to buy a meal of samosas in India or pad thai in Thailand. It also helps to have 600+ plus TBR books cluttering my office and begging to be read.

  16. Oh, aren't you the wise one?! Thanks for this very clever suggestion.

  17. First time swinging by!

I have a lot to TBR because of Ebooks. I stopped buying physical books because I had books EVERYWHERE...now that I can't see them, I click like a madwoman and then have a ton of books..but at least they aren't stacked everywhere.

I am learning that Free Ebooks are the devil because you end up downloading and they really aren't that great.

  18. Ack. you're asking the wrong person, cause I have a serious kindle downloading ebook addiction. I also sign myself for all these reading challenges. They are well and good cause I'm getting the reading done but can't quite keep up with the reviewing! Maybe it's a good thing i don't get books from publishers yet because kindle books, book club and library books keep me busy enough. Why can't I get paid to read in bed full time? :) hope you are having a great reading week. here's my list if you'd like to stop by...http://momssmallvictories.com/its-monday-what-are-you-reading-march-11-2013/
