Summer Goals

*Truth in packaging:  Photo is not actually me looking ahead to summer, but it is a photo I took of my friend last summer.

Summer Goals

I love this time in May. School is field trips and play days and end-of-year parties and summer is almost here. I'm thinking ahead to those endless warm days of sunshine and happiness and filling in a few of the time slots.

A personal essay writing class one night a week. Walking each weekday morning. A water aerobics class twice a week at the Y. Cooking a nice meal each day. A little kitchen remodeling. A half-hour a day for my Rosetta Stone Spanish. An August trip to Yellowstone. Maybe some drawing or photography. I'm hoping to open my school library once a week. And, of course, reading.

That's about it. A nice block of time to rest and get restored.

How about you? Do you have big plans for summer? Any book recommendations for me?

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.  It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

  2. Sounds like you've got a great summer lined up. Perhaps you can go check out an art gallery too sometime. I'm sure there are great ones nearby- they're usually free unless you go to a big exhibition which is a bonus.

    1. I intend to seek art out this summer. My writing class is on Thursday evening, and the Houston museum district is free on Thursdays, so I can hopefully do a little exploring before class.

    2. I've started venturing out to galleries now that the nights are longer and I have time off work! Sometimes they do special "late night openings" which are fab

    1. I worked in Yellowstone in 1975, so this will be a return trip.

  4. That sounds lovely! I'll have an energetic 5 year old home all day with me during the summer so I'm trying to come up with some activities to get rid of some of that energy but I'm also hoping for some reading time. And I'm looking forward to the fresh veggies from the garden.

    1. Fresh vegetables are a definite positive of summer. We just picked our first tomato.

  5. Great photo, and I must go to the beach this summer! My youngest son lives in the northern part of the state, on the coast. The perfect retreat, right? I am trying to convince my granddaughter to go with me on the train.

Enjoy whatever you do...and thanks for visiting my blog.

  8. This all sounds wonderful. I haven't started actual summer plans yet. My kids are at the age where they are doing their own thing and work is so crazy I'm trying to take it one week at a time. I'm actually looking forward more to fall.

  9. Sounds like you have some great summer plans. I am ready for the days of summer as well, after a long winter. Loved your author picks too, Rick Riordan seems like he'd be such a nice guy.

    Enjoy your week.

  10. That sounds just lovely and I am sure you will have a wonderful summer! I'm not planning on anything in particular besides working and spending time with the family. The usual :) And working on my garden as much as possible! I hope you have a great week!

  11. Wow, you sound busy! We're heading into winter here which will be nice, as our winters in my part of Australia are very mild.

As for the book recommendations.... I have no idea where to start. TOO MANY CHOICES! :-)

  13. My summer is never as restful as I make it out to be. Our university is year round so we get no break at work. In fact, with three summer sessions going at once, we are at times more busy. But, there is something about those long, hot days. This year, the Teen's two summer school classes are only in June so he will be done by July which is nice. The Girl is not going to camp this year so I am supposed to be looking at dance schools for her. She has expressed an interest in ballet and tap. Which we have done before but she didn't like the teacher and what she gets from her theater stuff was enough. Now, she feels she needs a competitive edge.

  14. Love your summer goals. I'm particularly struck by your goal to cook a nice meal each day -- my wife and I both love to cook but we've noticed we're very quick to order delivery -- and it's gotten to be an out-of-control expense! So we've splurged for a farm share and are committed to cooking everything in it. I hope we are successful!

  15. That's great Deb. Summer is wonderful. Apparently we will hit Montreal and the White Mountains of N.H. in August. Go figure!
