Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon: The October 2019 Edition

PRE-READATHON

If I am going to make Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon work for me this time, I've got to be prepared. I'm going to set up my post a day in advance, and I'll try to rock the reading whenever I can. Guess what is at the same time as Dewey's Readathon this year? The Texas Book Festival! So, whether I am reading or hearing authors speak or buying books or seeing authors sign books or listening to an audiobook on the way home, I'll count it as celebration of Dewey's, okay? And I'll focus on popping in to visit you on your blogs after I get home in the evening.

READATHON PREP

Books?  I've got a nice stack of nonfiction books that just came in for me from the library that I will focus on reading. I've also got a couple of nonfiction audiobooks at the ready.

Snacks? Oranges, cashews, bananas, granola, coffee

List of blogs to visit: October 2019 Readathon Reader Sign-ups

Bingo card? Goodreads Readathon Bingo card.

HOURS 1-4

Getting to Know You Survey
1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Austin and Alvin, Texas, USA.
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Writing Down the Bones.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Coffee.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I'm Deb Nance and I've blogged at Readerbuzz for over ten years. I'm a retired school librarian.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? This is my 26th readathon. I plan to read and blog, amid the Texas Book Festival. I also hope to blackout my Goodreads Readathon Bingo card.
I read in the first four hours before the Texas Book Festival begins. I finished a chapter in The Old Curiosity Shop, and half of The Secret Wisdom of Nature.
HOURS 5-12
Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now? A Soldier for Equality
2. How many books have you read so far? 3
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? The Secret Life of Nature
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? My whole day was an interruption! It's all good.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? It was perfect to be at the book festival for the readathon.
I was at the Book Festival during these hours. I spent a lot of time in the Read Me a Story Tent. I ended up listening to these picture books: My Papi Has a Motorcycle; A New Home; A Soldier for Equality; Vamos! Let's Go to the Market; A Big Bed for Little Snow; and A Big Mooncake for Little Star.
HOURS 13-15
I drove home from the book festival, listening to Writing Down the Bones. I got about halfway through the book.
HOURS 16-18
I might get in a couple of hours of reading before I drop off to sleep.
HOURS 19-23
Sleep!
HOUR 24

Closing Survey!

  1. What hour was most daunting? I can never stay up past 10. I...just...get...too...sleeeeepppp....
  2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read! I'd have to call this Dewey's 24-Hour Listen-a-thon. I listened to six books: My Papi Has a Motorcycle; A New Home; A Soldier for Equality; Vamos! Let's Go to the Market; A Big Bed for Little Snow; and A Big Mooncake for Little Star.
  3. What was your favorite snack? That's easy. The chocolate candy they give out at the book festival!
  4. What was your favorite facet of the day? I loved listening to Writing Down the Bones in the car.
  5. Wanna volunteer for our next event? Of course!

    1. It usually doesn't work out like this, and I wasn't happy about it when I first learned about it, but everything worked out perfectly.

  5. So glad you have a dewey's 24 hour read-a-thon. I first learned about that on Youtube and I always wanted to try it . I'd probably be the one at 2am sipping big gulps and trying to finish a chapter.
