Books for My Younger Self

Let's go back in time, shall we?

Way, way back.

My reading tastes were quite different back when I was young.

You might not even recognize me then.

Yes, I was a science fiction reader.

Real science fiction.

Invasion stories. Post-apocalyptic stories. Alternate worlds. I read all of it.

True story: On my first date with my husband, we discovered we were reading the same Ray Bradbury book.

Here's my favorite science fiction from my younger self.

Row 1   Ray Bradbury novels and short stories

Row 2   Best Of Series (short stories from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s)

Row 3   Hugo and Nebula Award winning novels of the 50s, 60s, 70s

Did you ever go through a science fiction phase?
Have you read any of these?
What are some good recent science fiction novels? (Anything past the 70s is recent to me.)

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each Tuesday That Artsy Reader Girl assigns a topic and then post her top ten list that fits that topic. You’re more than welcome to join her and create your own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well. Feel free to put a unique spin on the topic to make it work for you! Please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own post so that others know where to find more information.

  2. Funny how our taste in books change. I never like SF but, in those younger days - Danielle Steele was an automatic as was Dean Koontz LOL

  4. I have never been able to bond with sci-fi. The closest I got was Dune. Wish I could help!

  5. I've gone through a scifi stage, but that's mostly due to my obsession with all things Star Wars and Star Trek. Couldn't get enough. And I still enjoy them from time to time, but I haven't found a series to fall in love with like that. I really enjoyed your post!

Here's my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  6. I never went through a sci-fi phase unless you count the time I read the Wrinkle in Time series as a kid.

  9. That seems hard to believe that you were such a fan! But I think sci fi was quite popular once. I even read some of it as a kid .... but now -- hardly ever.

  10. Oh how awesome! Love the Star Trek print in the second pic by the way- I had all those Star trek novelizations by James Blish and those covers were so evocative!

I don't know if you've read any of Becky Chambers' stuff but her science fiction is fabulous.

  14. I occasionally read sci-fi but have never really gone through a phase where that's all I read. I actually need to read more of Ray Bradbury's books. Fahrenheit 451 is the only one of his I've read.

  15. I have never been a big science fiction reader and feel like I missed out on some classics because of it. I love that you and your husband were reading the same book! It was meant to be.

  17. I've read five of the books pictured. This was back in the undergrad/college days. II still pick up Bradbury and Asmov from time to time. There's always a story I've overlooked or forgotten. Rae
