Top Ten Books I Read Because Of Another Reader

The prompt this week is
Top Ten Books I Read Because of Another Blogger.

My wonderful mom passed away this summer---
she was the best reader I've ever known---
so I decided to do this week's post as a tribute to her.

Thank you, Mama.

Here are the Top Ten Books I Read Because of My Mom:

Every month, I got a new book in the mail.
I could not wait to see what would arrive.

When I got a little older, my mom would buy
 Bobbsey Twins books for me.

Nancy Drew was my mom's
favorite book character
when she was young.

My mom loved mysteries.
She helped me find Phyllis Whitney
when I was in elementary school.

One Christmas, Mama got my sister and me
 a collection of records.
One was this record,
Danny Kaye reading stories of Hans Christian Anderson.

Did I ever feel grownup
when Mama checked out Gone With the Wind for me?!

For many years,
Mama would share her gothic novels with me,
including books by Mary Stewart...

...Victoria Holt...

...and Dorothy Eden.

I'd be amazed if you've read this one,
one of my mom's favorite books.
It is based on a true story
and takes place not far from where we live,
two hundred years ago.
It is one of my favorite books, too,
just because my mom loved it so much.

How about you? What books have others led you to?

  4. Oh my gosh! I got goosebumps when I scrolled down and saw the picture of the Hans Christian Anderson album with Danny Kaye. We had that record in my house growing up, and I couldn't venture a guess as to how many times I listened to it. The Tinderbox was my favorite. Danny Kaye's voice was so memorable. I haven't thought about that record in years and years. Thanks for reminding me of it.

Outside of Gone With the Wind, though, that's the only one of yours I recognize. :-)

  5. Jay, I listened to those stories over and over. I would love to have a copy of that record for my school library. I need to see if it is out there somewhere. Last time I looked, I came up with nothing.

  6. How wonderful to do this as a tribute to your mom. :)

Reading together -- physically when I was a kid, and sharing the same books together and discussing them now that I'm an adult -- is one of the things I most enjoy doing with my mother.

We've shared some pretty awesome books: Christine Feehan's Dark series, Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters, the Harry Potter books, Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Narnia and most recently the House of Night series.

It's funny... I was sitting here thinking about your post and it made me reach a conclusion that it was my mom who got me to read and my dad who got me to write. The two really do go hand in hand.

What a beautiful, unique and meaningful way to share books recommended by someone you love. :)

  10. I remember those Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys books! And how old were you when you read Gone with the Wind? It's impressively big...and more than a little 'adult' in parts!

  11. That is so sweet, Deb, I'm sniffling now. It's funny how our parents and other family members might play a role in our love of reading. It makes me think of my grandpa as he read me books like "The Pokey Little Puppy" and "The Tawny Scrawny Lion." Such wonderful memories.

Also, I'm happy to hear you have Dust City now, and I really hope you enjoy it. :) Thank you for visiting and for sharing your top 10!

  12. My 6th grade teacher was the one who started my love affair with books. Where the Red Fern Grows is the first book I remember reading by myself.

My little bitty and I have been reading The Spider and the Fly over & over & over again. She loves that book and I look forward to sharing more with her as she gets older.

  14. Aww, that's such a sweet way to answer the question! I used to read the books my mum read when I was younger, which meant a lot of Danielle Steel and Joan Jonker (this Liverpudlian author who probably no one has heard of outside the UK). i would most likely shun these books now, but they still got me into reading and for that I am forever grateful. Aww, let's all thank our mums all the time!

  15. I love Danny Kaye! I'm going to have to see if this record was ever made into a tape or CD. It would be fun to own.

  17. What a beautiful tribute to your Mom. I have a non-reading mother, but she always bought me books when I asked. That's what I call good parenting!

  18. Oh Debbie, such a beautiful post, and what a wonderful remembrance of your mother. It helps me continue to read aloud to my son, even though it gets harder with every passing month. Perhaps he'll remember these times as fondly as I do?

  20. What a sweet list. My mother introduced me to some greats as well: Ballet Shoes, The Velveteen Rabbit, Judy Blume, A Wrinkle in Time, Dr. Zhivago, I could just keep going.

Check out my list at The Scarlet Letter.

  22. What a beautiful tribute to your Mother! This brought tears to my eyes!

I also had a copy of Go Dog Go! I really should get a copy for my daughter...

  23. It's fantastic your mum was a reader and that you'll always have this to remember her with, especially because books can bring up so many memories just by the sight of them.

I have some P.D. Eastman books that I love so much I went and bought my own copies as an adult!

  24. Awesome list Debbie! I loved Go Dog Go! I love books that have sentimental value - makes them all the sweeter! Thanks for stopping by my blog!
