Ten Books I'd Love to Read With My Book Clubs

It's hard to suggest books for your book clubs. After all these years on this planet, I finally realize that not everyone likes things just as I do.

I've already reread a lot of my favorite books with my book clubs. Some had a great response: The Good Earth. Gilead. Unbroken. Others, not so much: The Mouse and His Child. Working.

So what are some books I might suggest to my book clubs? Here are some of my ideas:

Crossing to Safety or Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner

 Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott

My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok

Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien

Good Poems by Garrison Keillor

True Grit by Charles Portis

Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky

Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Window by Jeannie Baker

What did I forget? Any suggestions for me?

  1. Oh thank goodness for Window, I thought I wasn't going to have read any of your suggestions! I'd like us to get to Out of the Dust and Roll of Thunder sometime soon (ish). Lots of other good suggestions. I bought Wallace Stegner all those years ago with BGL, but missed out on reading it, so it still sits on a shelf, unread and unloved.

  2. I wonder if Stegner will be less and less vital with time.

  3. Great list! Suite Francaise was such a fantastic read, would make an equally fantastic book for a book club! I remember someone recommending me Angle of Repose...will have to bump that up the list at some point :)

  4. I remember doing TRAVELING MERCIES with a book group several years ago. Great discussion. And the Mayor's Book Club here in Austin was THE THINGS THEY CARRIED a few years ago, along with Siobhan Fallon's YOU KNOW WHEN THE MEN ARE GONE. That was a good year for discussion of the Mayor's event. I've not ever read Wallace Stegner and I've had both the books you mentioned on my list for years. Maybe this year?

Ugh, isn't this the worst?? ;)

  6. You've got some great titles there! I wouldn't have thought of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, but that would be a good one. The Things They Carried would be perfect for a discussion group, I think. Olive Kitteridge is one I want to read, but haven't yet.

  7. Great picks! I loved so many of these. I have to admit I don't like Out of the Dust. :) But that's probably just me.

    Thanks for sharing.

I accidentally did next week's post on accident, but still check it out please. mine's here

  8. Great books! I've been wanting to introduce short stories into our reading group and have had my eye on Olive Kitteridge. True Grit is a great read and would be perfect for discussion! The Things They Carried was a One Book One Community selection a few years back. I couldn't read it though after learning of the animal violence, but was received well by many. Thanks for sharing!

  10. Choosing books for book clubs is always challenging. The ones I've been involved in have been mostly social and not so much readers so sometimes it could be a little frustrating. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't read any of these though I do have several Ann Lamott's waiting for me on a shelf. I'll have to look for the rest. They all look interesting.

  11. I haven't heard of any of these (apart from The Things They Carried which I own but haven't read). They look interesting though.. Definitely not something I'd pick for myself but that's probably the point of a book club! Which one's your favourite out of those?

  12. I love your selections. I read Traveling Mercies years ago, but am scared to reread it. What if it doesn't measure up? Good Poems is such a lovely anthology. My Name is Asher Lev is another favorite too. I hope you get the opportunity to suggest some of these reads to your book clubs.
