Wondrous Words from To Kill a Mockingbird

In honor of the unexpected and delightful publishing of a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird yesterday, I share my favorite Wondrous Words from the original book:

"North Alabama was full of Liquor Interests, Big Mules, steel companies, Republicans, professors, and other persons of no background."

It had another think coming.

Turnip greens

Butterbeans

whipped me

what the sam hill he was doing

high and mighty

Now don't you fret, ma'am.

Yawl hush.

Ain't you got any sense at all?

get Miss Maudie's goat

foot-washing Baptist

Miss Priss

done a jim-dandy job

he's right stove up

ambrosia

mimosa tree

cut it out this red hot minute

he's just moseying' along

we can't all have our 'druthers

Calpurnia shelling peas

pickled pig's knuckles

she was standing arms akimbo

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where we share new (to us) words
that we’ve encountered in our reading.
