Characters I Just Didn't Click With

If I don't like a book, it is usually because I don't like a character. Here are some of the characters I just didn't click with.

Didn't like him. Didn't like her.

Please don't judge all middle-aged women by this vindictive woman.

The main character man is so miserable he kills himself early on.
His wife doesn't seem to lament his loss much either.

No love for Marlow. Certainly no love for Kurtz.

I really hate it when I dislike a character who is a real person.

Good grief. My most despised stereotype? The alluring nerd.

Loathed the book. Loved the movie. Go figure.

I had a teacher who loved this book.
I just couldn't connect with a doll made of hickory nuts.

I realize I'm stepping into dangerous territory.
But I will dare to say it...I hate Owen Meany.

And now, what will probably be the final nail in my coffin,
I will speak this out loud:
No, I didn't like either of our romantic characters in this book. Not a bit.
Please don't hate me.

  2. hahaha! Yes, it is dangerous territory speaking of Owen Meany that way. On the other hand, you are spot on with Bridge of Madison County. AND...the Outlander series? I just can't make myself read it.

  3. I must admit that it took me a very long time to warm up to Jamie in Outlander! Great list :)

  4. I haven't read Owen Meany though it's on my TBR because people keep telling me I have to. I'm hesitant to read Outlander because despite lots of people I trust telling me they love it it just doesn't grab me. As for Bridges - I read it as a teenager and remember not liking the characters.

  5. I haven't read any of these, but "I just couldn't connect with a doll made of hickory nuts" is a really great line lol. And it does bother me when women are portrayed as jealous/vindictive/desperate, so I probably wouldn't like that character either.

  6. We agree on Owen Meany. :-) It's good to know I am not alone. I haven't read Gabaldon's books and I can't say I have any interest to try them. And I cant drum up interest in reading The Devil Wears Prada. Fashion and the like just don't interest me. But, like you, I did like the movie. I agree with you about Marlow and Kurtz from The Heart of Darkness.Ugh.

  7. I haven't read most of these, but I somewhat agree when it comes to The Devil Wears Prada. The movie was better. :) Thanks for sharing, and for stopping by my TTT earlier. :)

  8. I can understand where you're coming from with 'The Devil Wears Prada'! I read the book ages ago, really need to give it another try before I pick up the sequel! xx

  9. Outlander was okay, but I certainly didn't love it like so many.

  10. Haha, I appreciate your brave confessions. I will go ahead and say I haven't even read Owen Meany, so I'm sure some people are grumpy at me too!

  11. I almost had a heart attack when I got to Outlander! Oh! Oh....Jamie Fraser.....poor Jamie! It's ok, I'll comfort him. I do like Claire, I'm just jealous because if Jamie. I agree with Lance Armstrong (sadly). Great list!

  13. I haven't read most of those books so I can't really weigh in. I think that Anne Hathaway saved THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and that is why the movie is better than the book. I read Owen Meany so many years ago I can't remember liking/disliking him, but I think that John Irving is an acquired taste I haven't acquired. My list is all Austen characters. Watch out!

  14. Your TTT lists are always a favourite, I love the breadth of your reading and your choices. This is of course another great list, much interest, although I haven't read most of them- only, I think Bridges of Madison County (which, shhh, I didn't hate). I hope you like A Walk in the Woods- I loved it.

  15. You have a good and brave list. I'm trying to think of a character I didn't click with, but I'm drawing a blank presently. Usually I guess I would stop the book if I dont click with the people. I wouldn't want to spend any time reading about Lance Armstrong either.

  16. Thank you for visiting my TTT! (And so sorry it took me so long to visit back!) Isn't is funny how "tastes" for characters varies as much as tastes for food? I for one loved Miss Hickory! But then I also enjoy peanut butter, bacon, and banana sandwiches. (The Elvis!) Great list! And happy reading!
