The Camera Sits There, Looking at Me

Why, you may be asking, am I posting a photo of a camera?

Why, instead, am I not using said camera and posting said pictures from said camera?

Simple answer. I don't know how to use it.

I've proved that. Twice.

My sister oh-so-kindly loaned me this lovely gem to carry along on our Big Trip to Europe last spring. She gave me a short tutorial. I lugged this heavy thing everywhere, and tried taking pictures.

Everything came out blurry.

I didn't say anything. I thought I just didn't know what I was doing.

Finally, everything came to a head. I was in a dark old church in Florence, trying to take a photo of a candle. Blurry. Blurry. Blurry. My sister noticed I was having trouble and asked me what was wrong. I confessed that my pictures were blurry. She gave me a couple of suggestions, but it didn't correct the problem. Then she took the camera and tried to take pictures. Blurry. Blurry. Blurry.

Something's broken, she said.

I felt terrible. Not only had all my pictures from my Big Trip to Europe come out blurry, but I'd also broken my sister's second-best camera.

When we got home, my sister took the camera to her son-in-law, a professional photographer.

Red-faced-moment. It turns out the camera wasn't broken at all. A tiny switch had been flipped. My sister's son-in-law flipped the switch back, and everything was right with the world.

My sister has oh-so-kindly loaned me her camera again.

Now I'm too scared to touch it.

Are there picture-taking classes online? I need help!

  1. First problem it's a Nikon which came out of the Arc well 2007, I prefer my Canon ;)) we all make mistakes even I have done silly things with mine like taking a whole load of photos on the Video setting and wondering why the sizing was all wrongor haveing it on manualinstead of AF. I have been on a couple of courses but the best was is to go out in the garden and try it out on different settings. There should be an Auto mode on it try that first. Belive it or not I take photos with a camera like that, a compact and & iPhone. Just go and play with it and have fun

  2. Hahaha! I was going to mention the stabilizer button. I have a nice camera like that and I took a class at the college to learn how to use all the manual settings but 9 times out of 10, I set it to auto and let it do its magic on its own.

  3. I was also going to suggest putting it on auto mode and just playing with it in your garden and inside the house (practice for churches and other cool buildings)

    1. It takes the pressure off me to simply use it in automatic.

  5. Hello! !
Today I decorated the Christmas tree. I really enjoyed it! Every year I get very excited, I decorate the Christmas tree and it begins to feel like Christmas. I think this year's Christmas tree is also very beautiful.

  6. My husband is always learning new ways to use his Nikons, and buys new lenses and the like. His photos are amazing. Maybe "peppylady" has a point, though: he does have a PhD. And I use a canon set on automatic. More and more people are switching to the newer iPhones, which have some amazing software to help with beautiful photos. Good luck with learning: it can be done!

  10. My son has fancy cameras and knows how to use them, but even he uses digital ones these days. Fancy digital ones, of course. LOL.

I mostly use a simple digital camera, but when I got my new laptop, I had to have a tutorial from The Geek Guys on how to upload my photos to the computer.

There is always something technical to dumbfound us these days! Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

  11. Your blog post gave me a laugh. Even with my simple Canon PowerShot, I don't know how to use half its features. Although I often wish for a fancier camera like the one you pictured, I know it would be wasted on me. What happened to you is exactly what I would experience. Now I just point and shoot with my little camera and my cell phone and hope something turns out.
