A Glossary of Joy; How to Cook a Wolf; Eager to Love; and a Wonderful Party for Our New Granddaughter

Bailey's photo with her dad is just to the right of center in the family gallery

It was a busy week. We delighted in getting to know our new 17-year-old granddaughter, Bailey, at the party we held for her (all of us have been vaccinated) over Labor Day weekend. Bailey is kind, smart, and beautiful. She will be graduating from high school next May, and she plans to study education or something in the medical field in college. "It really doesn't matter to me what I do," she told us, "as long as I can help others." Wow. We eagerly made plans to get together again as soon as we can.

How to Cook a Wolf, a book food writer M.F.K. Fisher first published during World War II, is filled with ideas on ways to cook great meals during the days of rationing during the war. Eager to Love is spiritual author Richard Rohr's book about the life and legacy of Francis of Assisi. Now I can't stop looking for more books about Francis. I'm always on the lookout for books about happiness, and I was charmed by Happiness Found in Translation: A Glossary of Joy From Around the World. Author Tim Lomas shares one hundred of his favorite words about happiness in other languages with us. One of our book club members asked me to read The Journal of Mrs Pepys and see if I agreed with her that it would be a good book for the club. The book is based on the diary kept by Samuel Pepys from 1660 to 1669, but the story is told from the point of view of Samuel Pepys. Do I think it would be a good book for the club? Definitely.

  1. My best to the newly-grown family and its new member! I love the M.F.K.Fisher cook-a-wolf book because it shows how different things have become now than they were back then. She was such a neat writer.

    1. I was shocked at how much things have changed since the rationing days of WWII. Economy was essential. I think How to Cook a Wolf would be a good read for the young, just to get a taste (sorry) of what things were like then.

  2. I've only read Long Ago in France by M.F.K. Fisher, but I loved her writing! I'm adding The Journal of Mrs. Pepys to my list. Pepys' diary entries are fascinating, aside from the great fire, in one he details his wife's new petticoat!

What a wonderful family celebration! Bailey is adorable :)

    1. I have not read the diary of Mr. Pepys, but this fictional version of the diary of the Mrs. was excellent. I'm always intrigued with the lives of women of other times. Such difficult lives.

  23. I love the new family photos! Bailey sounds like a special young woman.

I vividly remember one of my high school classmates reporting on the Diary of Samuel Pepys. She absolutely loved it! I think she relished all the gossip and minutiae of daily life back then.

    Enjoy your week!

  25. So happy for you all and your wonderful family. She has a great attitude about life. I have The Invisible Husband of Frick Island on my TBR, but haven't gotten to it yet. I will watch for your review Deb. This past week, I spent a lot of time with family and friends (all vaccinated) as we got in our last swims in the pool before I close it for the season. Have a wonderful week.

  26. I love how happy everyone looks in the photo with Bailey! That's a really cute picture of you and your husband with her.

Does that one book really include how to cook a wolf in it? lol

    1. No, the idea of cooking a wolf refers to the idea of trying to feed your family during hard times, I think.

  27. Are you reading David Copperfield for Nick Senger’s Chapter a Day read along? I began it, and loved it, but it’s hard for me to go at a slow pace with a big book. I’d rather jump in for “total immersion.” So I’ll probably pick it up closer to October and read it straight through.

So glad to be catching up with you and other bloggers during this Sunday Salon you host! Have a good week. Xo
