The Sunday Salon: The Consolations of Being on a Pale Blue Dot

Welcome! I am delighted that you joined us here at the
Sunday Salon

What is the Sunday Salon?

The Sunday Salon is a place to link up and share what we have been doing during the week. It's also a great opportunity to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

What I Read Last Week (Links are to my reviews):

What I'm Reading Now:

Roots by Alex Haley (Chapter-a-Day)

I Am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki (Classics Club)

Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford (Classics Club)

I began to list 3 Good Things every day during the pandemic. Now I've established a regular routine of writing down my 3 Good Things. Here are 3 Good Things from last week:

Good Thing #1:

Mindful March 2025

Good Thing #2:

I had so much fun at my friend Cindy's
75th birthday party in Galveston
last weekend.

Good Thing #3:

Spring is coming here.
Wild violet and a Monarch in my yard.

  2. I deleted Disqus this morning. I backed up my blog before I deleted it. But my comments may be gone. Still, I have always resisted blogging for money and I just could not put my posts out there with these ads attached.

  3. I love to see signs of spring and your photos are showing this. I have crocuses blooming in my garden now and it’s warming my heart during this trying times. Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. I like Geraldine Brooks. So nice that you were able to visit a friend for a party. That looks really fun! No Discus! You're the second person I know who has bagged it.

  5. I love the photo of the violet. Mine are not blooming yet, but my violas are.

  6. Spring is definitely on the horizon here as attested by your sweet little violet. I think I will take up your "three good things" habit. I need to be able to focus on something other than the disheartening, depressing, discouraging news emanating every day from Washington/Mar-a-Lago.

  7. Yay for signs of spring. We were in the low 50s yesterday and today it has been flurrying off and on! So funny. Have a great weekend!

  8. I use a mental health app called Finch and one thing I do every morning is list something I'm grateful for and it has helped so much. I may have to up it to 3 things! I'm loving seeing signs of spring - though not looking forward to pollen season! Have a great week.

  12. Spring was definitely here last week. Mid-80s. I had to fire up the box fan. Glad to see the cooler temps return today. Not ready to wear summer jammies yet. lol

Glad you had a good time celebrating your friend's birthday.

  15. The wild violets and monarch butterfly are gorgeous! We've been seeing signs of spring here in Northern California as well. It's early for us, but so pretty!

  17. Nice to see spring in your yard! It's very exciting to us in the north that spring is on the way. It seems you had a good reading week ... the Brooks book looks sad but I will likely read it at some point.

  18. How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith sounds like a good book. I really like the idea of Mindfulness March! It’s the perfect reason to pull out my knitting. The birthday party looks fun.

  19. I can't wait for spring, i'm sick of winter. My crocuses got confused and came a little early but then the rabbits ate them so we couldnt even enjoy them before the next cold snap moved in. they also ate a mini rose bush, the little devils.

  20. I'll know spring is coming in Massachusetts when my bedroom is warm enough to put away the electric blanket - but I am not holding my breath! I will enjoy yours vicariously, however.

  21. The birthday pic looks like everyone had good fun! Hope you have a good week.

  22. It's so cool that you already have monarchs. We still have snow. I hope you have a good week!

  23. I'm so thankful for good reading. Books are my good thing everyday! Your lists are always so enticing, I definitely have to read The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store.

  24. Happy March! I am going to try your mindfulness chart - sounds like a wonderful idea. We have tiny shoots of tulip stalks poking out of the dirt. Spring with be a-springing, soon.

  25. That birthday party looks amazing! it's exciting to have spring coming here in our area with all our cold. It will be much welcome this year.

  26. I'm late this weekend! I needed your three good things, love the photos.

  27. Your three good things all make me happy. Hooray for spring!

  28. Love in a Cold Climate is good - their real life is so much more crazier than anything in the books. Their father used to 'hunt' them - literally chase them around with a gun for a fun game. So bananas.

  29. I am looking forward to reading The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. I have a print copy on my TBR, but considered listening to the audio from my library--then remembered it will be a book club read later in the year, so will try to wait closer to then to read it. I am glad you had a good time at your friend's birthday celebration. And what a beautiful butterfly! We have a busy week ahead. Mouse has two band concerts and a voice lesson and there's work, of course. I hope you have a good week and take care!

  30. I can't wait to see the monarchs again this year! Sadly we didn't have as many last year. I do need to replant my milkweed though; it got all messed up during the ramp build.

Popping over to see your review of How to Be Brave. I am waiting very patiently for it to come in at the library for me.

  31. Sounds like a nice week. The birthday party looks like fun. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  32. Thank you for sharing such important and diverse books! What a fun gathering to celebrate Cindy, who, evidenced by this photo, is a very special lady indeed!

  36. How We Learn to Be Brave I clicked on to see what it was about and was delighted to read your review. I so admire her. She sure is gentle and brave in a very gracious way. I will see if I can get the book.

  37. I think we're all excited for spring this year. While I dislike the time change, I'll be happy with the longer days. Sweet little violet. I'm seeing daffodils around my neighborhood and it won't be too long before the whales return from Baja. I still want to read Geraldine Brooks' Horse, but I love memoirs and will probably get to Memorial Days later this year. Maybe for nonfiction November. Take good care, Deb.

  38. Love Nancy Mitford, and have just bought the geraldine brooks.

  39. I used Disqus for a while when I was on Blogger. I can't remember why I deleted it but I did. I lost all my comments from the time I had it.

The violet and butterfly are a welcome sign of spring! Happy reading!
