It's Monday!

What Arrived Last Week

I had a fantastic reading week. Lots of great new arrivals. I didn't mean to start A Nice Little Place on the North Side until we go to Chicago for our son's graduation mid-May, but I did and it took all my willpower to set it aside for that trip. Essentialism is a book that was apparently written just for me. See that blob of confusing lines on the left of the cover? Yes, that's my life. I think I need a bit of Essentialism. And humor is all that's going to get me through the end of this school year, so thank heavens for The Harm in Asking and Curmudgeon's Guide to Getting Ahead.

Well, humor and a trip to San Antonio for a librarian conference...which starts tomorrow! Prepare to be besieged with author photos and happy bookish moments in the next few days.

What I Finished Last Week

I read like crazy this week. Lots of meetings (four!) and a hair appointment added to my regular insane work schedule and you will be surprised that I got through all of these books. But meetings and hair appointments also mean wait time and wait time means time to really dig into a book. Once you dig in, you just can't go to bed until you hit the final page, can you? No, you can't, and that led to lots of late night reads this week. Good late night reads.

I'll have reviews coming soon, but for now let me just share a few tiny thoughts. Ballad of a Small Player may be my first 4+ read this year. Beautifully written and, alas, depressing, too. But if dark, it's also a very, very real look at a cold, lost soul. Expecting is a heart-tugger, with likable main characters trapped in an unavoidably impossible situation. Just had to read When I Was Puerto Rican as it's the book I'll be sharing on World Book Night later this month. Whew. An immigrant story like no other, I think. The Cat was a reread and just as confusingly zany this time as last. Book alert: kids like to read about war, publishers, and there is a dearth of books about war. I predict with 100% certainty that World War I for Kids will be a big hit at schools, and I hope the publisher will continue to come out with more war stories for our readers. Divorce Papers and Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon? Let's just say: more of that humor I so need these days.

Soooo...what are you reading today? Have anything good going that you can share with us? I'm especially hoping to hear about some good light titles. Please share!

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between.  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from. I love being a part of this and I hope you do too. As part of this weekly meme Book Journey loves to encourage you all to go and visit the others participating in this meme.

  2. I agree about the lack of war books for elementary kids. However, with our anti-weapon status, kids keep showing me ever picture thy find that includes a weapon like I'm going to jerk the book from their hands and throw it away. Silly kids! Come see my week here. Have a great week.

  3. Essentially your reading would have calculated to more than one book a day - that's a successful week!
    Happy Reading!

  7. Nice mix of books! So, is that a new Ladies' Detective book? I've read a few but somehow lost the momentum. They're fun reads.

    Have a good week.

  10. I don't think our library has an anti-weapon status. Of course I do live in Texas.

  11. You had a super busy reading week! What did you think of The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon? I finished that one a couple of weeks ago and I loved it, I can't wait for the latest book in the series to come out in November.
