Back from China and Off to TLA!

It's time for another Sunday Salon. I'm happy to be here once again, talking books. I'm happy you stopped by and I thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I spent last week in China. It's always fun to travel the world in the library.

And it's going to be a fantastic week, book-ish-ly speaking....I'm headed to the Texas Library Association Conference in the wonderful city of Austin, Texas. I'm not sure what the week will hold, but some of the things I'm especially looking forward to are:

     (1) Learning about Makerspaces in the library
     (2) Hearing Dick Allington share his always-daring thoughts on reading
     (3) Bringing home lots and lots and lots of new books to share with the students at my school!

Here's what I managed to drag home a few TLAs ago!

What Arrived Last Week

Can't wait to get to these!

What are you reading today?!

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.  It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

  1. Oh have fun! I know that you always enjoy the Austin TLA. Your week in China sounds so fun. What books did you read? And what did you think of Being Mortal? I sure wish I could keep up with your reading output.

  2. Last week I read Demi's The Empty Pot and that old classic from 1938, The Five Chinese Brothers.

Being Mortal took me where I never think about going: that last weeks or months of life. It reminded me of my mom's last two months and how much hospice helped our family make that time a good one.

  3. Have a fun time at TLA! I was hoping to volunteer there, but it didn't work out with my schedule. Maybe next year.

  5. Ah, that's what TLA stands for. Should have realized since you're a librarian *sigh* <-- the sigh was for me, not you. :)

  6. Isn't it wonderful to travel through our bookish world? I actually prefer it...or through movies. After I retired, I did a little traveling, and while I enjoyed being in those new places, I didn't like the process of getting there: packing, flying, living out of a suitcase. So I decided that I was more of an armchair traveler, like the character in The Accidental Tourist. Love that book...and movie.

The Promise has such an interesting cover, I must check it out! Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

    1. You should definitely check out The Promise. It's historical fiction, set during the Galveston Storm of 1900.

  9. Have a great time at the convention. I imagine it is more sedate than reader cons like Authors After Dark. Enjoy!

  13. I love the idea of traveling the world through books... why don't I do it more often?!

Perhaps this summer, in an effort to add more delight to life, I will select a country to visit. I could find fiction as well as non-fiction books, and perhaps attempt to prepare a few meals to showcase the local cuisine.

Thank you for opening my eyes to possibilities :)

    1. After reading a couple of less-than-stellar reviews of Dead Wake, I admit that I was worried going in. Now that I've finished it, I'd say to completely discount any negative reviews

    2. It was as good or better than any of his other books.

  15. Enjoy your time in Austin! I'm interested to hear what you thought of Dead Wake and Being Mortal. I'm interested in reading both. thanks

  16. I want to read Dead Wake. I loved Devil in the White City. If all non-fiction books were written like Larsson's, I would read more of them!

  17. Ha! I thought you really meant you went to China last week and was thinking you were being very laid back about it!

    Have a great week.

  18. I just saw Dead Wake on a table at a friends house. Now I want to read it too but must be patient until I get further in to The Woman in White, my Classics Club selection of the month.
