Reading...and Coughing...Reading...and Coughing...

I only thought I was sick a couple of weeks ago ("Even a Raging Cold Can't Stop This Reader"). Last Wednesday a sickness the size of a Category 5 hurricane blew in, and I've been holed up ever since, surrounded by an ocean of NyQuil bottles and wads of Kleenex.

I feel a little better today ("I will be better for Easter....I will be better for Easter....") so, before the next sickness typhoon rolls in, I thought I'd send out a quick update on my bookish world.

What I Finished Last Week

"All good things must come to an end," they say. I didn't want to finish it, but I finally wended my way to page 858 and had to close the book. I feel satisfied. Happy, really.

Gosh, what is it about this book?

I must spend some time puzzling that out. For a future post.

What Arrived Last Week

My mailbox was stuffed full this week with all kinds of wonderful books-for-review:

Mary Roach has the strangest ability to make me laugh about the most un-laughable stuff. This time, Roach takes on war in Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War.

Wouldn't it be nice, you ask, to have a book to explain all-things-Catholic? Why, yes, reply Melissa Musick and Anna Keating, presenting us with The Catholic Catalogue: A Field Guide to the Daily Acts That Make Up a Catholic Life.

The author of Orphan Train says Lily and the Octopus: A Novel is "a big-hearted, inventive, funny novel that also happens to be a profound meditation on love and forgiveness." Whew. Doesn't get much better than that.

And, finally, there's Lit Up: One Reporter, Three Schools, Twenty-Four Books that Can Change Lives. If there's one book I hope holds true to its promise, I hope it is this one. I'd love to have some high school English teachers read this one and share their thoughts about it.

There you have it. I think I'll head back to bed, with a couple of these books on my nightstand. I do hope I'll stop coughing soon.

What are you reading today?!

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

  2. I hope you have some time off for Easter from work so you can rest up? Well, regardless, hope you can get some rest today. As for what I'm reading today, besides Sunday Salon posts, I'm not really sure yet. After reading Being Mortal, it's hard to get back into reading anything else.

  5. Oh, feel better soon! Colds are so miserable. I have been having sinus headaches in the mornings lately, but luckily, they go away as soon as I'm up and about.

Enjoy the week...I am now very curious about Lonesome Dove, one of the books I haven't read from this author. Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

  6. I hope you're feeling better today! It's no fun being sick on a holiday.

I have yet to read Mary Roach, but she's been on my radar. War (and peace) is a long-time interest so maybe this is the one that I'll read.

  7. I hope you feel better soon! I had that cough for months after getting over whatever I had for weeks!

I was cleaning out my storage unit, and of course there are book in there... LOTS of books... And guess what I found in one of the boxes? A brand new copy of Lonesome Dove!!! I brought it home and it's in the TBR pile now! I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! And the books you received look fun too! I just wrote down Lily and the Octopus, especially after it being recommended by The Orphan Train author, which was a great book!

    Happy Easter!

  10. Feel better! That's no fun, especially when you go through Kleenex like that. I always hate that. Lonesome Dove you've kinda made me curious about- I've heard of it of course but never read it although the show rings a bell. Glad to hear it was good! The Catholic catalogue sounds interesting too even though I'm not Catholic, I bet there's a lot of interesting info there.

  11. Ugh! I hate coughing! Hope you get better quickly! I don't know what that Lily and the Octopus book is about, but there is a dachshund on the cover so I probably need it!

  13. Oh I hope you feel better soon! I go through spells too where it just feels like I catch everything. Interesting new books. I love Mary Roach but I haven't read anything by her in awhile. This one looks good. Have a great week!

  14. The David Denby book is one I'd love to read. I'm a high school English teacher who works very hard to get my students engaged in reading. And I've liked previous books by Denby.

I do hope you feel better soon!

  19. My sister-in-law keeps telling me how good Lonesome Dove is and I have a copy, but I've yet to pick it up for a read! I'm glad to know you enjoyed it and I know I'll make time to read it one of these days. Maybe it's the small print in the mass market that's putting me off...

    Feel better soon!

  20. So sorry you have been ill. Nothing worse for sure. I've read a couple of really good books that I highly recommend, The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens, and The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin. Last week I decided to tackle Ken Follett's The Fall of Giants.

  21. I got Lily and the Octopus too. I'm listening to Where Men Win Glory now and Grunt seems like it would be a great follow up. Feel better soon!

  22. Where you better for Easter? My 9 year old has been sick since Wed and I can only think the flu, no energy, won't eat anything, fever, sigh. 858 pages, I could never, but so happy you enjoyed it.

  23. I hope you are feeling better. Not to depress you, but my cough lasted for almost two months. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  24. So sorry that you've been sick for so long. Hope you were able to enjoy Easter anyway.
I've been meaning to pick up a Mary Roach book. She comes up with the most unusual topics. And, as someone who used to work in schools/had kids in schools/homeschooled kids... I love anything to do with their reading material. Lit Up sounds good to me!

  25. The Denby looks fascinating! I hope you feel better soon!!

  26. I really enjoyed Lonesome Dove too and it's so not in my wheelhouse. "What is it about this book?" is such a great question! And I'm really looking forward to Grunt as well!
