2,613 Pages: Reading Enormous Books

Suddenly I am reading some very big books.

Paul Auster is coming to Houston on Monday night so I'm desperately flipping pages in his latest work, 4321 (Is that how you write it? Or should it be 4 3 2 1? Or something else?) Good grief, it's 866 pages. That's a lot of book.

One of my favorite authors is Richard Powers (The Gold Bug Variations), and I was thrilled to receive an ARC of his most recent book, The Overstory. It's 505 pages.

I'm also reading Barbara Grizzuti Harrison's Italian Days and Italo Calvino's Italian Folktales. Days is 479 pages and Folktales is 763 pages.

Whew. That's a combined total of 2,613 pages. Whew.

You know what I'm doing today. And tomorrow. And the next day.

How about you? Are you attempting some big books? Do you have any recommendations for me? Preferably some small tomes?

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

  1. It's interesting how the length of books changes over the years. I talked recently about how 'big' books were the trend in the '80's and also how some older mysteries I've recently reread were in the 200-250 range. Now, most books hit around 300-350, right? Things to think about. Most people these days don't want to read 'chunksters'. You're bucking the trend, Deb! Enjoy!

  2. 4 3 2 1 is a great book, I really loved it :) I hope you like it too. It can be slow, I only got into it after like 100 pages, but after that it was absolutely amazing :)

  3. I vowed to read more of my chunksters this year, and I made a start on that last month, with one at 640 and another at 585.

When I was very young, I remember reading some 1,000+ books without a second thought. But nowadays, there are so many books to read, so I seem to read shorter ones.

Enjoy your week! Thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. Enjoy the enormous books! I think the longest books I read was the Harry Potter series, but they were so good, I didn't want them to end. Happy weekend :)

  7. I've been reading some very long books lately, too. Last week I picked one up that could be read in a single sitting... seemed like such a treat! ;-)

  9. I don't currently have any huge books on my list; I tend to leave those for the summer when I have more reading time.

  12. Just finished the 4th book in the Song of Ice and Fire series which was over 1,000 pages and am now on the 5th book which is also over 1,000 pages. Hope yours are enjoyable. Definitely also looking for some much shorter reads after this! :)

  13. Wow, that's a lot of pages. I remember I read a book about 700 pages (Sarah J. Maas, probably one of the YA authors who writes the most pages ever), and because it's so big but also because I love it so much, I ended up doing an all-nighter. It's okay, YOU'LL SURVIVE XD.

    Have a great week!

  14. I recently finished The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne and it has 580 pages. That's a big book for me, but the pages flew. Now I'm thinking about rereading The Grapes of Wrath, which is also quite long.

  15. I finished Proulx's Barkskins recently and loved all 717 pages.
