The Cybils Winners, A Single-Book Reading Week, and the Book Bus

After five months of reading 357 books, and two rounds of judging, the Cybils winners for fiction picture books and board books have been announced.

The 2017 Cybils Fiction Picture Book winner is Big Cat, Little Cat by Elisha Cooper.

The 2017 Cybils Board Book winner is Meet Happy Bear written by Nathan Thoms and illustrated by Carles Ballesteros.

For other Cybils winners, take a look at the Cybils website.

I only read one book this week. That sounds weak (for me) but this novel is 866 pages. Surely that gives me a few bonus points.

Ella: Queen of Jazz by Helen Hancocks
Petra by Marianna Coppo

The Spirit Photographer by Jon Michael Varese
The Overstory by Richard Powers

We have a wonderful resource in my school district, Alvin ISD. It is the Book Bus. It rolls out in the summer, loaded with books for children, venturing into spots where children don't have good access to books.

We librarians in the district spent Friday cataloging books for the Book Bus.

I donated all the books I received as Cybils Fiction Book and Board Book entries to the Book Bus. That was over a hundred books.

Do you have children's books you no longer need? We could use them for our Book Bus. Contact me through the comments here or by e-mail at debnance at gmail dot com.

What are you reading today?

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

  1. The Book Bus looks awesome! Enjoy your week.

    1. It's an amazing way to keep kids reading during the summer.

  2. Oh that Book Bus is wonderful! So glad you guys do that! Wish I had some books to send, but alas, my kid book days are long gone. Bet you guys had fun getting the books ready!

  3. I love the Book Bus! It reminds me of the bookmobile we used to get in the foothill community where I lived for thirteen years. But the Book Bus looks like more fun.

Congrats on the Cybils...and for that 866 page read. I'm determined to read more of my longer novels this year...and read a couple with 500+ and 600+ pages in January.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. I hope you Enjoy The new books, happy reading!

  5. The book bus looks an amazing project - I'm sure that they loved your very generous donation. And congratulations on finally achieving the result of the Cybils - what a mammoth task - and you are also a hero for taking on such a doorstopper - I just hope that you are really enjoying the book. Have a great week - I hope you get a chance for a bit of a rest after an extremely busy and successful week:)

  6. I love the Book Bus! We have something similar here and I'd love to be a part of it. I do donate books to them:)

    My Sunday Post

  7. The book bus sounds wonderful - and what a great way to re-purpose the Cybils books!
Ella Queen of Jazz sounds like a good book to introduce my granddaughter to music other than hip-hop :)

  8. I'm looking for new board books for my grandson. I will have to look for Meet Happy Bear.

  9. I love the Book Bus idea! And wasn't it fun to be a judge for the CYBILS?! I thought so.

  10. Congrats on reading all those books and getting the judging done. I’d love to see that book bus in real life. Have a great week!

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  11. Love the Book Bus idea! I think an 866-page book counts for, what?, three!

  12. I can't wait to read the winners, a great excuse to go to the bookstore for new books for the kids. I love that your district has a book bus, what a great way to keep the kids excited to read all summer long. You must have the best bus around with all your Cybil books donated, what a wonderful gesture!

  13. The Book Bus sounds like an amazing thing for underserved young readers. I used to automatically add the Cybil winners to my media center book orders but now that I've retired I don't read many children's books. I'll have to catch up if I ever get to my public library. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  14. Oh the book bus looks so adorable and so perfect. I love it and such a great resource.

  15. Big Cat, Little Cat, and Petra are on my wishlist. My post this week.

  16. I love to read children's books and Big Cat, Little Cat looks so cute. The book bus is amazing, the color and design is so vibrant. Have a great week!

  17. I have actually read Big Cat, Little Cat, and there was just something "special"about it that I couldn't put my finger on but enjoyed/appreciated a great deal. I love the whole concept of Alvin's Book Bus!!

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
