Summer Readathon, 20 Books of Summer, Painting Our House, and Holding Alligators

There are lots of bookish things going on or coming up soon....

Sarah at Puss Reboots revealed that she has been keeping records of her reading for thirty-two years.

Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon will host a Summer Reverse Readathon on August 2nd and 3rd, especially designed for those readers who live outside the US time zones. I've already signed up.

Cathy at 746books is hosting The 20 Books of Summer ChallengeWhy not join in with your own 20 (or 10, or 15!), read along with some of the books or just cheer her on as she tries to get that dreaded 746 down by another 20 in just 3 months? Join the 20 Books of Summer Challenge here.

Tamara of Thyme for Tea will be again hosting Paris in JulyParis in July is a month long blogging event, with very few rules - except to focus on something Parisienne, French, or from France.... movies, books, authors, food, places, music, experiences, people, culture, history, future.... whatever you like to blog about - just do a post on something you love about Paris or France, and link it in. The linkup to sign up for Paris in July will be live on June 15.

Brona’s Books is hosting the Moby Dick Readalong beginning in August of 2019 and finishing at the end of February of 2020. To let others know of your interest in joining in, leave a comment here and share on social media.

Yes, my husband and I are holding alligators to share with children through our Texas Master Naturalist group.

Does it look like I didn't get much reading done this week? In the past seven days, we have hosted my family for an early Father's Day...driven to the Hill Country to spend the day with my husband's family...had all the windows on our house replaced...volunteered a couple of times with our Texas Master Naturalist group...and, all the while, in our spare time, we have been painting the outside of our house. Whew.

While I was reading Hungry, the story of the quest of the highly-esteemed chef Rene Redzepi for new flavors in the world, author and food critic Jeff Gordinier compared what Redzepi was searching for with Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, a vocal choir from Bulgaria known for singing in microtones, the notes in between the notes you know, "notes that have been melted and bent until they're several shades of blue." So here is this beautiful music, for your enjoyment, discovered the way I discover most things, through the pages of a book.

How was your week?

Did you finish any good books?

Have you run across anything book-ish that you would like to share with us?

I invite you to link up here and/or at the Sunday Salon page on Facebook each weekend (Saturday-Sunday-Monday) and let us know what you have been doing. Visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

  1. You have really been busy! Don't know that I want to hold an alligator, but I did have a close encounter with a tarantula this week. And a giant scorpion in our house. Spider is fine - scorpion is not or not in my house anyway. First one I've seen this season and I hope the last. I never go barefoot in my house because of those nasty little stingers.

I've kept up (mostly) with my reading since 1993 in notebooks. I used to have a spreadsheet too, but it was lost when a computer died. Ah well. Wish I had kept up since I was a teen. I'd love to remember exactly what I read back then.

I recently listened to Maybe You Should Talk to Someone and I liked it a lot. Don't do much non-fiction, but that one suited me at the time. Have a good week, Deb!

    1. I got stung by a scorpion while in the middle of nowhere on a rock adventure with my husband. It was painful for weeks. I definitely don't want to hold a scorpion.

I wish I had written down what I'd read from childhood on. Now and then, I remember a book and I mark it on Goodreads. It's a rough way of recounting the books of long ago, though.

I liked Maybe You Should Talk to Someone a lot. I learned quite a bit about therapy and relationships from the book, I think.

    1. In May I was reading a book a day. The painting has really slowed me down. I wonder if I could listen to a book on tape while I paint.

  4. Whew is right. You've been a busy beaver. :) Wait, do you even have beavers in Texas? :)

    1. Beavers are making a comeback in Texas. (One of the many things I learned in my Texas Master Naturalist training!)

Thanks for the info about the readathon. I will add it to the list of events at the Classics Club. I'm in charge of that.

  6. My book group is reading Pachinko in August and I'm really looking forward to it!

I started keeping track of what I read back in 1985. I'm slowly adding titles and reviews to my Goodreads account, which has been a lot of fun. I have 16 book journals and have only made my way through the first one in my Looking Back posts on my blog. It's a slow, but enjoyable process.

I thought about the Moby Dick read-a-long, but after a few pages remembered why I never finished the book. Just not my cuppa!

We're having our house painted, too! Definitely not something either of us would want to do as we don't like climbing up tall ladders!

Have fun in the Hill Country. We love that area!

    1. Wow. 1985. Good job, Les!

I'm sure I'm going to hate Moby Dick. Nevertheless, I feel oddly compelled to try to read it.

  7. Sounds so cool that you have a father's day tradition. I'll probably send my dad some pizza as a surprise. I have to get on google and find the nearest pizza delivery service near his home in Florida.

  8. You've had quite a week!! I started tracking my reading in 1999, but so wish I'd started earlier. Every once in a while I'll come across and old series or teen book I loved, but had completely forgotten about... oh the memories!

I saw on goodreads this morning that you loved Pachinko - I'm so glad! It was my favorite last year. Gottlieb's book is on my library hold list, so hopefully I'll get to it this summer.

    1. I started in 1999 also. But I wish I'd started as a child.

Yes, it was your recommendation that sent me toward Pachinko. Wonderful read. Quite contemporary, really.

  9. My reading week hasn't been all that great since I've been sick all week. Hopefully next week will be better. I hope you have a great week!

  10. Sounds like you've been VERY busy! I can't believe that person who's kept track of her reading for 32 years!! That's impressive!

    1. We have one alligator that's seven years old. We have to keep his mouth taped shut, for safety. He will have to be released soon.

  13. What a great collection of bookish things! I'm currently reading The Salt Line by Holly Goddard Jones and Murder at the House of Rooster Happiness by David Casarett. I like to always have more than one book on the go :)

  16. Only in book blogging can I find people who have 746 unread books in their house that they decide to read, or someone who's tracked thousands of books read since 1987, and thus feel like I'm part of a larger tribe, not some weird outlier. Like others have said, it makes me wish I'd started tracking earlier. When I joined Goodreads in 2009, I did add a lot of books I'd read when I was younger, but only the really significant ones stand out, right? What else did I read?

I have never seen an alligator, much less held one!

    Have a great reading week

    1. Wow! Your week was so busy I'm surprised you finished anything! I've yet to do a read-a-thon because I always seem to have something going on. A summer one would have been perfect for me, but I'll have my 6-year old granddaughter staying with me for a few days right when this one is going on. I don't think she'll go for me reading for 24-hours!
