Hurricane Hanna Is On Its Way to Texas

And the days just get stranger....now a hurricane is on its way....

I finished three good books last week.

And the movies were even better.

Look at this amazing dance sequence from An American in Paris:

I'm making good progress on Rosetta Stone in French. I know and use these phrases:

à bientôt - see you later
désolé - sorry
d'accord - sure
bonne nuit - good night
joie de vivre - zest for life
je ne sais pas - I don't know

I even had a dream in French last week.

One more week of Paris in July....

Here's a story my husband ran across this week and passed on to me. A library book was returned, seventy-three years late.

Good Thing #1.  A hurricane is coming our way. Why, you say, is that a good thing? Well, at least it's not coming directly for us. Winds are expected to be 35-45 mph with 4-12 inches of rain.

Good Thing #2. Many book festivals this fall are going online: Book Festivals from The Classics Club Blog. Would you go to an online book festival? I'm especially interested in the National Book Festival in Washington DC.

Good Thing #3.  During one of our daily walks this week, we saw a cloud rainbow. I didn't have my camera with me, but I found a photo online so you can see how awesome it was. Have you ever seen anything like that?

Á bientôt!

  1. Ah yes, Hurricane Hanna - hope you guys get some good soaking rains and no damage. They have predicted we will get some rain, but the totals keep going down as the forecast moves the system further and further south. Hope we get a little at least. It was certainly humid this morning as I was walking and cloudy. Now hurricanes and summer storms and tornadoes - do you feel like that's something we know more about, Deb? Ha! Not that they are good, but at least we have some experience with them. I pray that the hard-hit areas of south Texas manage with both an actual storm and the virus storm. Sigh.

    1. Hurricane Hanna turned out to be a pleasant day of rain, with little wind here. I hope south Texas fared as well.

    2. I think the Valley got quite a bit of rain - hope it won't be too awful for them. They probably needed rain, but they have enough on their hands right now. We've got a very few quick showers so far. Think it turned further south than they predicted and we won't gain much except an abundance of humidity.

  2. I've never even heard of a cloud rainbow. How magical! I also loved the returned library book. That's magical in its own way :) Good luck with the hurricane. It's been a year hasn't it?

    1. I was disappointed I didn't have a camera so I looked it up online when we got home and I was surprised to find that a cloud rainbow is a thing. It was new-to-me, too.

  3. "An American in Paris" - one of my all-time favorites! We got a bit of rain this morning, possibly thanks to Hanna. It was desperately needed. Here's hoping more is on the way and that the storm doesn't cause damage.

    1. I really had never heard of Leslie Caron before we watched American in Paris. I later learned she is still alive, in her nineties, and was on the Durrells.

  6. I’m learning a French with Duolingo, I started because my 13 year old was doing it and I though it looked like good fun, I’m really enjoying it!

A hurricane, just what you need!

Stay safe and have a good week!

  8. Hi Debs! Oh no, I would be very scared of a hurricane. We have lots of problems in SA, but the weather isn't one of them. I sometimes wonder what is worse - natural disasters or human disasters.

Hope it passes you by and that you will have a wonderful week dreaming of Paris. Here's my The Sunday Post

  9. Never saw colorful clouds like that- how beautiful. Wow- 3 books this week, I'm surprised you had time to do so much else. I keep saying I want to learn to speak French, but I never do. My husband and his family who live nearby are French speaking. You would think I would have picked it up in over forty years of marriage.

  11. I say je ne sais pas a lot. I use to work with a guy from Senegal so I got to practice my limited French occasionally.I went to a virtual author talk that I probably wouldn't have attended had it been in person. The cloud rainbow is cool.

  13. Lol I say je ne sais pas a lot as well! I remember in my French class way back in high school, this boy bet me he could score higher on our French test - I ended up getting 100% , while he scored a B. He brought me in a little mini cake that he had decorated with that phrase. Lol. Funny memory. :)

I will have to check out the online book festivals!

    Stay safe!

  14. What a great post. Oh, to see Sunday in the Park again. I love taht musical, both acts. I have trouble picking a favorite Sondheim from three or four of them but this is high on the list. And good books, too. I need to get French Rhapsody. Looking forward to your PIJ posts this week.

I'm glad the hurricane looks off the mark for you but do be careful! I'll be thinking of you and hope it doesn't take a turn.

  15. Glad your virtual French holiday is going so well - and thank you for the YouTube clip - you're right, the dancing is incredible!

As for your cloud rainbow - wow - I've never seen anything like it and we get a lot of rainbows here. Although the very best one was on our wedding day when we were travelling to our honeymoon hotel and we saw the most amazing, intense double rainbow - which ended on the bonnet of our car! We pull into a lay-by and it was still there. I tried to take a photo of it, but the camera fuzzed and none of the pictures came out. We still regard it as a miracle and when times are tough, we remind each other of that wonderful rainbow...

I hope Hurrican Hanna continues to avoid you and hopefully, avoids everyone else, too. Have a peaceful happy week, Deb:))

  19. I liked seeing your Desert Rose plate! I used to have a whole set, but gave them away when I downsized in 2007...then built up a nice set of Franciscan Apple. But alas, I don't have it anymore, now.

Enjoy your week and your books...and stay safe from the Hurricane and the Pandemic!

  22. I would definitely go to an online book festival! I've been to a ton of online book events since the pandemic lockdown began, some of which wouldn't have existed or I wouldn't have been able to attend otherwise. Good luck with the hurricane! I hope you get just enough rain and none of the damage!

  23. What a beautiful cloud rainbow! I don't know if I've ever seen one, but we used to see a lot of sun dogs in the winter when we lived in Nebraska. Not exactly the same thing, but they are pretty. I loved the video clip of Leslie Caron. What a great film. I took two years of French in high school, but can't speak anymore than the simple phrases. I do understand a bit more in print and have enjoyed Louise Penny's mysteries, which are set in Quebec. I'm sure you know the word, "Merde!" :)

Stay safe and hopefully you'll just get some rain (which we could use here, of all places!).

As for that library book being returned ... very funny ... of course it went to Canada! the Canadians stole it! glad it's back now. Enjoy your week.

  31. I've never seen a cloud rainbow or even heard of one. It looks amazing. Your French phrases are all ones I recall from my one summer session French class in college. In fact, they almost represent the totality of what I remember from that class. Of course it was almost 50 years ago. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  32. Oh a dream in French! How good. We've seen some pictures of the hurricane on the news and didn't look good but you must be more out of its way I hope. I love that so many book events and author events have gone online, its great.

  33. I went to the National Book Festival a couple of years ago for the first time, and it was huge! That's amazing that you had a dream in French. We're planning a virtual trip to Ireland next month, since our real one has been postponed to 2021. You've made the most of a disappointing situation! I love that dance scene from An American in Paris, but my husband fell asleep during Gene Kelly's long dreamlike dance number in that movie!

  34. Gene Kelly is one of my all time favorites, so I've always had a soft spot for An American in Paris. Oddly, it's never made me feel the urge to actually go to Paris myself.
