I've read over 200 picture books so far this year. I'm a judge for Fiction Picture Books again for the Cybils Awards, and most of the books have been in that category.
You'd think that picture books might lose their charm with me, but, no, I'm always amazed to find another wonderful story. And a goodly portion of the wonderful stories this year have been stories that make me laugh.

I read for 16 hours.

I'm on the front page of the newspaper this week.
Some of us from our naturalist group planted trees at the county park.
Good Thing #2:
Our book club met outdoors to discuss
the Gulf Coast Reads book, Gods of Jade and Shadow.
Good Thing #3:
The 100,000th Little Free Library has been installed.
LFL #100,000 stands at
the Association for the Advancement of Mexican-Americans in Houston.
Little Free Libraries will share 36 million books this year.

Congratulations on your front page for a very worthy reason! Back when I was a lot younger we planted saplings at a local play park, it was great over the years to see them grow.

DeleteI haven't read any of those but we loved picture books so much when my son was little. Color Kittens was a big favorite. Love the picture of you planting the tree and book club sounds like fun! How nice to get outside and see people even if it was socially distanced. Have a great week!

ReplyDeleteOff been offline a bit since we're camping. Still reading the same old book and don't really have anything new to blog about. I'll be back to my old routine in another week. Right now, I'm enjoying our peaceful campground before my hubby has surgery next month.

DeleteSome of your picture book titles make me laugh! Thanks for planting trees in the park and congratulations for getting your picture in the newspaper! I want a little free library but our tiny suburban neighborhood back home wasn't a good place for one. Maybe one day! I was able to volunteer with a local library friends group when we stayed in Maine last year. I helped them in their "book shed" selling and organizing donated books. All of the donated mass market paperbacks were sorted into a pile for the town's six little free libraries. I enjoyed volunteering there a lot. Unfortunately, every other Friends of the Library group I've checked with hasn't needed any volunteers and the libraries themselves don't want to pay for a background check for me if I'm only going to be around for three months. Oh well. I'll keep asking!

ReplyDeleteI have to admit I haven’t really read a picture book since I stopped teaching and my kids grew out of it though reading aloud was always one of my favourite things to do.

I wish more young people and adults were able to read picture books. I can see they would be very useful among middle grade and high school students in the classroom.
DeleteRecipe books are the only "picture" books I read, but I try to do one a week. I used to go to the library and get hard copies of cookbooks, but they are so heavy when I am out and about. Otherwise I only read electronically. I discovered that if I took a e-cookbook from the virtual library and read it in my browser, i.e. on my laptop, I could enjoy it and "snip" things of interest.

ReplyDeleteOne of these days, I'll return to the 24-hour readathon. It is always so much fun and the community is my favorite part of it. Not getting that lucky nowadays.
I like to review everything I read on Goodreads. It makes it easy to keep track.
DeleteThat's good to know about the Little Free Libraries! Our neighborhood has quite a few of them, and sometimes I've found a good book in one or another of them. Sadly, I think the selection has decreased since the Pandemic -- there are still many many books, just not as good. You seem to have had a good week!

What an awesome week you've had! I've read Zippy Chippy too and all of Artie Bennett's books. His books are truly hilarious. Congrats on being on the front page of your local newspaper. Planting trees is a good cause, helping to purify our air. As much as I was tempted to join Dewey's readathon I just don't have the energy for it. Glad you had a great time participating.

Glad you are having good weather so you can meet outside for your book club. I'm looking forward to reading that one as well. Looks like you are slowly but surely getting through your classics! I love that. I just finished Emma! I've been reading it for the last three months. Just a chapter here and there and eventually you're done!
