Picture Books that (Might) Make You Laugh and the 100,000th Little Free Library is Installed

I've read over 200 picture books so far this year. I'm a judge for Fiction Picture Books again for the Cybils Awards, and most of the books have been in that category.

You'd think that picture books might lose their charm with me, but, no, I'm always amazed to find another wonderful story. And a goodly portion of the wonderful stories this year have been stories that make me laugh.

Here are some picture books with a bit of fun that I've read this year.

Friday Night Wrestlefest by J. F. Fox
A Book for Escargot by Dashka Slater
Animals Brag About Their Bottoms by Mai Saito
The Button Book by Sally Nicholls
Soaked! by Abi Cushman
We Will Rock Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins
Dozens of Doughnuts by Carrie Finison
Everyone's Awake by Colin Meloy
No Fuzzball! by Isabella Kung
Snail Crossing by Corey R. Tabor
The True Story of Zippy Chippy: The Little Horse That Couldn't by Artie Bennett
Mootilda's Bad Mood by Corey Rosen Schwartz, Kirsti Call, and Claudia Ranucci

Have you read any of these?

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy...85% read

Devotions by Mary Oliver...85% read

How to Draw Your Beautiful Ordinary Life...70% read

I finished my 28th Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon this weekend.
I read for 16 hours.
I finished 23 picture books.
I participated in 5 mini-challenges.
I visited 15 blogs.

Good Thing #1:
I'm on the front page of the newspaper this week.
Some of us from our naturalist group planted trees at the county park.

Good Thing #2:
Our book club met outdoors to discuss
the Gulf Coast Reads book, Gods of Jade and Shadow.

Good Thing #3:
The 100,000th Little Free Library has been installed.
LFL #100,000 stands at
the Association for the Advancement of Mexican-Americans in Houston.
Little Free Libraries will share 36 million books this year.
(My LFL, if you are curious, is #2924.)

How are you doing?
Please share any good book recommendations you might have for me.

I'm happy you found your way to the Sunday Salon. Sunday Salon is a place for us to link up and to share what we have been doing during the week. It's a great way to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Some of the things we often talk about at the Sunday Salon:

  • What was your week like?
  • Read any good books? Tell us about them.
  • What other bookish things did you do?
  • What else is going on in your life?

Other places where you may like to link up over the weekend are below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

  1. Congratulations on your front page for a very worthy reason! Back when I was a lot younger we planted saplings at a local play park, it was great over the years to see them grow.

Little libraries are popping up more and more in the UK, my nearest one is twenty miles away, the joys of being rural!

Have a lovely week and stay safe.

    1. I wonder where Little Libraries are most common. I wonder how many different countries have LFLs.

  2. I'll remember a lot of these titles as the Toddlers get bigger! If I ever get to see them again!

  3. I haven't read any of those but we loved picture books so much when my son was little. Color Kittens was a big favorite. Love the picture of you planting the tree and book club sounds like fun! How nice to get outside and see people even if it was socially distanced. Have a great week!

  5. I'm copying you photo of fun picture books. My grandson is right at the age that good books are a must.

  6. Little Free Libraries are one of the best ideas to come along in a while. Congratulations on achieving fame in the local newspaper!

How about this lovely autumn weather we're having? If only it would continue past a few days.

  8. I'm tempted to buy a copy of each of those picture books to send to my cousin who has a little one (and teaches TK, although online this year). They all look wonderful!

Off been offline a bit since we're camping. Still reading the same old book and don't really have anything new to blog about. I'll be back to my old routine in another week. Right now, I'm enjoying our peaceful campground before my hubby has surgery next month.

    Take care!

Glad you are able to do some camping. Lovely.

  10. Some of your picture book titles make me laugh! Thanks for planting trees in the park and congratulations for getting your picture in the newspaper! I want a little free library but our tiny suburban neighborhood back home wasn't a good place for one. Maybe one day! I was able to volunteer with a local library friends group when we stayed in Maine last year. I helped them in their "book shed" selling and organizing donated books. All of the donated mass market paperbacks were sorted into a pile for the town's six little free libraries. I enjoyed volunteering there a lot. Unfortunately, every other Friends of the Library group I've checked with hasn't needed any volunteers and the libraries themselves don't want to pay for a background check for me if I'm only going to be around for three months. Oh well. I'll keep asking!

    Enjoy your week!

  11. Oh, it's great that you got to be in the paper! It looks like a fun project too! I haven't actually seen any little libraries yet, but hopefully will get them over here as well some day!

    Have a great week!

  12. It looks like you had a great week! And how cool that you planted trees - and how cool that you were the front page photo! :)

And we love Escargot! That little snail is a big favorite around here!

  13. Congratulations for the front page - and for planting trees :) Funny, the little black cat on the No fuzzball cover looks like mine. You couldn't hold a book club outside here, it's raining - perfect weather for reading inside with a cup of tea. Stay safe :)

  14. It sounds like a wonderful week - and congratulations for featuring on the front page for such a worthy reason:)). And I'm SO impressed with your performance during your Read-a-Thon - I keep promising myself to take part in one, as I still haven't done so and I think I'd love it... Have a wonderful week, Deb.

  15. A week full of good news!
I have to admit I haven’t really read a picture book since I stopped teaching and my kids grew out of it though reading aloud was always one of my favourite things to do.

Wishing you a great reading week

    1. I wish more young people and adults were able to read picture books. I can see they would be very useful among middle grade and high school students in the classroom.

  16. Recipe books are the only "picture" books I read, but I try to do one a week. I used to go to the library and get hard copies of cookbooks, but they are so heavy when I am out and about. Otherwise I only read electronically. I discovered that if I took a e-cookbook from the virtual library and read it in my browser, i.e. on my laptop, I could enjoy it and "snip" things of interest.

  17. Kudos to you on reading over 200 picture books! I know I read a lot of those too but I do a poor job of tracking. They really are so much fun to read!

One of these days, I'll return to the 24-hour readathon. It is always so much fun and the community is my favorite part of it. Not getting that lucky nowadays.

  18. That's good to know about the Little Free Libraries! Our neighborhood has quite a few of them, and sometimes I've found a good book in one or another of them. Sadly, I think the selection has decreased since the Pandemic -- there are still many many books, just not as good. You seem to have had a good week!

  20. Ag no... ! I just typed you a nice long message and then it got deleted. Don't know why!! And I can't remember what I've said. I know I'm glad you made the front page of the newspaper! Yea!!!

And I love all your picture books. It makes me pay more attention to the picture books at school. I think I will start reading a few more and share it with you. I took the most beautiful one from school this week, will share it over Christmas time.

Hope you will have a good week Debs and I will chat to you again later in the week.

    Lots of love,

  21. What an awesome week you've had! I've read Zippy Chippy too and all of Artie Bennett's books. His books are truly hilarious. Congrats on being on the front page of your local newspaper. Planting trees is a good cause, helping to purify our air. As much as I was tempted to join Dewey's readathon I just don't have the energy for it. Glad you had a great time participating.

  24. Congrats on your read-a-thon reading! I love picture books. Good ones look pretty and they have beautiful stories. Another congrats on planting all those trees and getting onto the front cover! Glad you are having good weather so you can meet outside for your book club. I'm looking forward to reading that one as well. Looks like you are slowly but surely getting through your classics! I love that. I just finished Emma! I've been reading it for the last three months. Just a chapter here and there and eventually you're done!

Enjoy your week and I hope you stay safe and healthy.
